The former couple was together for over a decade after they met on the set of the 2001 film, Planet of the Apes. They welcomed two children during their long-term relationship, a son and a daughter.

However, one of the most unusual aspects of their relationship was their living arrangement. The pair opted for two separate homes side by side in Belsize Park, North London.

In a 2010 interview with The Telegraph, the Harry Potter actress opened up about their unique setup. She revealed that they have separate houses next to each other which are connected by hallways and are accessed by a communal door.

The actress shared,

They say Tim and I are a mad couple with subterranean tunnels between our adjoining houses, and that our children live down the road with another couple.

During the interview, Bonham Carter also reflected on the reasons that caused them to choose such an arrangement, claiming that it helped enhance their relationship and lives.

Further talking about their unique setup, Helena Bonham Carter explained why she and Tim Burton decided to connect their homes. “We just have two houses knocked together because mine was too small,” she shared.

Bonham also noted that despite having their separate house, they enjoyed a normal relationship with some added benefits which she believed strengthened their bond.

We see as much of each other as any couple, but our relationship is enhanced by knowing we have our personal space to retreat to — It’s not enforced intimacy. It’s chosen, which is quite flattering – if you can afford it.

She humorously mentioned that one of the reasons behind their setup was also the Beetlejuice director’s snoring. “Tim does snore, and that’s an element,” she said, adding that while they tried various remedies, none proved effective, and Burton wasn’t keen on undergoing surgery.

Throughout their long-term relationship, the couple collaborated on several projects before their romance came to an end in 2014. While they never married, the actress described their split as a “divorce,” saying, “I went through a very painful divorce,” as per People.

Both have since moved on, with Bonham Carter being in a relationship with art historian Rye Dag Holmboe and Burton now dating the Italian actress and model Monica Bellucci.

Burton and Bellucci were initially linked in early 2023 before confirming their relationship. The couple has also worked together on the recently released sequel of Burton’s iconic 1988 film Beetlejuice.
