The first few episodes of Black Clover don’t make the best impression of Yuki Tabata’s writing. The characters are loud, specifically Asta and it’s enough to prevent viewers from continuing the series. However, the rest who gave it a chance beyond the beginning were immediately converted into fans.
When starting the series, some fans noted it was like Naruto but magical. Asta is an underdog who wants to be recognized badly and gains the strength to do so by continuous perseverance. They share many other similarities, being in the shonen genre, so haters weren’t impressed. However, this changed as Black Clover progressed.
Comparing Black Clover to Naruto might be quite odd to loyal, long-time fans who never doubted its brilliance. Tabata’s writing is quite distinct from Kishimoto’s in terms of its narrative focus and how its main characters operate.
Black Clover haters soon stayed quiet and joined the other side of loving the series with how intricate and fascinating the lore is. Even the characters draw you in. While Yami Sukehiro, Asta’s mentor, is a fan favorite, he’s only one of many highlights to look forward to.
Asta might be loud but Black Clover’s story speaks for itself
Most Black Clover fans were hesitant to continue to the show, thanks to how loud and enthusiastic Asta can be. There’s always one character in every anime that could easily burst everyone’s eardrums, like Katsuki Bakugo from My Hero Academia or Hinata Shoyo from Haikyuu!!
Asta’s volume can be a lot for many people, including long-time fans. However, as it goes on, there’s more depth to him than just that. His dreams of becoming the Wizard King are quite a challenge since he was born without magic. It’s a unique situation since their society hangs on magic and anyone without it is an anomaly.
To make up for his limitations, he gives everything his all, at the cost of our eardrums. He’s unrelentingly determined and brave. His shouting is just an expression of his resolve, something reluctant fans recognize and grow to love.
Fans on Reddit talk about this factor and how Yuki Tabata’s brilliant writing then changed their minds.

Some fans, however, weren’t so charmed by Asta, even as his voice actor calmed down on the yelling.

This particular Redditor doesn’t seem to have the patience or didn’t comprehend the story. It seems like haters might still be out there.

Despite what fans might subjectively feel for Black Clover and Asta, there are also other characters to look forward to. Yami itself makes the show worth watching. Noelle Silva might be more to someone’s taste for character development. The Black Bulls, Asta’s squad, start as a group of misfits but soon evolve into a family-like unit for those who love the found family trope.
The rewarding experience of Black Clover
Shonen anime is filled with battles, but Black Clover’s battles are in a league of their own. Yuki Tabata blends magic, strategic teamwork, and choreography excellently.
As the series goes on, more of the world is exposed. The hidden truths come out, particularly about Yami’s past and Asta’s rare Grimoire. It bends the expectations of the fans at every twist and turn.
So is Black Clover worth watching? Definitely. If you can ignore Asta’s first impression, which does tone down as Gakuto Kajiwara gets used to his first-ever voice-acting role, you will be rewarded greatly with an amazing story.
Black Clover is available on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
