At the Venice Film Festival, Nicole Kidman won Best Actress in Babygirl, and her victory was celebrated by many, but her absence on the stage told a different story.

Moments before receiving the award, Kidman was hit with the heart-wrenching news of her mother’s passing. Halina Reijn, the film’s director, read a statement by Kidman in her acceptance speech, as seen in a video posted by Deadline.

Today, I arrived in Venice to find out shortly after that my brave and beautiful mother, Janelle Anne Kidman, had just passed. I’m in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her.

Her mother Janelle Anne Kidman, was a nursing instructor and feminist advocate who had been a guiding presence in the actress’ life. The loss of her mother was devastating, and it came at a time in her life when she achieved a career milestone. 

She shaped me, she guided me, and she made me. I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking. My heart is broken.

The actress’ personal loss loudly echoed as she reached new heights in her professional life, however, this is a recurring theme in her life that had previously surfaced during another critical moment in her career.

As per reports by E-Online, around the time of her win, Kidman had finalized her divorce from Tom Cruise and ended their 11-year marriage. She did address the fact that she was emotional during the speech itself.
