The Testaments has been a little slow for Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday in the past couple of episodes, even as it’s set up important beats in the story. “Broken,” The Testaments Season 1 Episode 8, blows open those doors. Not only does the episode set up some big showdowns in the episodes to come, but starts to percolate important information throughout the group. Danger is coming to Gilead, with Agnes and Daisy potentially kicking a hornet’s nest.

Spoiler Alert !!!

This recap contains in-depth spoilers for The Testaments, "Broken," and "The Handmaid's Tale."

The Testaments Season 1 Episode 8 Recap

Agnes (Chase Infiniti) dreams of dancing with Garth (Brad Alexander). However, they are interrupted by Becka (Mattea Conforti) because even in her fantasies, Agnes knows the two of them are going to marry. Agnes awakens from her fantasy to a plate-breaking ceremony at her betrothal to Commander Weston. It is her job to put it back together before their wedding. On her way to school, she passes Garth. They congratulate each other on their betrothals.

At Aunt Lydia’s school, there’s tension in the air between Agnes and Becka. Shunammite (Rowan Blanchard) and Daisy (Lucy Halliday) are not allowed to attend class with the Greens. Shunammite believes the others are going to “copulation” class, and we rejoin Agnes to see that she was correct. Aunt Vidala (Mabel Li) explains the birds and the bees as “following your husband’s commands.” They move on, without explaining sex in any way.

Daisy goes to the bathroom and discovers she’s had her period. She tries to cover it up, but Shunammite discovers the truth. She’s frustrated that even a Pearl Girl is eligible before her. Daisy begs her not to tell anyone.

Hulda (Isolde Ardies) plays croquet with Agnes, but the girl seems upset. Agnes picks up on it and asks her what’s wrong. Hulda reveals that Dr. Grove assaulted her as well and blames herself for what happened. She’s concerned the Aunts and her husband will abandon her. Agnes’ fantasies turn dark, with Dr. Grove dancing with her and holding her while Hulda leaps to her death.

She wakes up to Aunt Lydia announcing all of the betrothals. Shunammite is excited for most of her friends but makes snide comments about a few of them. Becka reveals that she was given a choice after all and chose Garth. This surprises Daisy, which causes Becka to lash out at Agnes. Shunammite asks what’s wrong with everyone at the table, and Becka reveals her engagement invitations are going out today.

At home, Paula (Amy Seimetz) leads Agnes and Weston through their cake tasting. Agnes appears distant, not liking a single cake. Weston hopes his excitement will carry over to Agnes and reminds her that she no longer has to listen to Paula’s every whim. Agnes uses her newfound power to choose lilies over Paula’s wishes.

Miriam (Birva Pandya) and Agnes talk about their future husbands, but Agnes is called to speak with Aunt Vidala. Hulda told the Aunt about Dr. Grove sexually assaulting her, but Vidala covers it up. She tells them to forget what they’ve discussed. Hulda apologizes to Agnes for getting her involved, but Agnes tells her she’ll be okay.

A girl cannot find her embroidery project, which causes Shunammite to look toward Daisy. When they’re left alone, Shunammite confronts Daisy and expresses her frustration again. She tells Daisy that she cannot let her parents down because her brother was “one of the 68 taken on the night of tears.” They bond over her revelation, and Shunammite cries. Daisy tells her about sex to try to strengthen their bond, but it sounds so unbelievable to Shunammite that she storms out of the room, thinking that Daisy is playing a trick on her.

At Becka’s engagement party, Agnes, Hulda, and Shunammite see Garth’s father from a distance. He’s a paraplegic, injured during the fight for Boston. Agnes speaks with her father (Nate Corddry) about her upcoming wedding. He admits to his daughter that Paula is pushing for them to get a handmaid soon. He goes to speak to other commanders and tells Agnes to speak with Becka.

Agnes and Daisy say their congratulations, but Garth’s father knocks over a glass. When he does, Garth and Daisy take him outside to give Garth’s father some fresh air, leaving Becka and Agnes alone. Outside, Garth and Daisy discuss that Mayday poisoned his father. Daisy jokes that Freud would have a field day with him.

Daisy asks how Garth is going to break off the engagement, but he laughs. It was never his plan to fall in love, so he always expected a similar arrangement. Daisy reveals that she had her period, and she’s scared to be married off. Garth reminds her that he’s her handler, he has his own handler, and he does not know June. There is no “done” with Gilead until Mayday wins. He got her into this position because he was under the impression that she wanted to destroy Gilead. He asks her what she really wants.

Inside, Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) asks Commander Weston about what happened to Talia. He tells her that Talia’s fate is not her business, even if she were a Pearl Girl. Dr. Grove approaches Agnes and Hulda during the party, reminding them that he will see them both soon. Agnes rushes outside and speaks with Aunt Lydia about her conversation with Vidala. She reveals that she is “very sure” Hulda is telling the truth. Lydia takes a beat and tells her that Dr. Grove will be dealt with. However, doing so in bible-speak, Agnes believes that nothing is going to happen.

Agnes sits alone in the gardens when Daisy comes downstairs to summon her back for Paula. Agnes uses their time alone to hand off feminine products, revealing that Shunammite told her about Daisy’s predicament.

Agnes promises never to turn on her friends, which Daisy calls hypocritical, as she hides from Becka. She knows that Agnes is in love with Garth. However, she reveals that Garth is not the problem, but Dr. Grove. Agnes reveals that she and others have told Lydia. Daisy thanks her for telling the truth. Over narration, Agnes reveals that she did not know what Daisy was going to do. “Never trust a f***ing Pearl Girl.”

Is The Testaments, “Broken,” worth watching?

Yes, The Testaments uses “Broken” to set up the last two episodes while promising some fireworks to come. We know that Daisy is now eligible, the girls’ matches are set, and that Lydia is aware of Dr. Grove. With so many moving pieces, it’s no surprise that Daisy is set to become the dynamite in the community. Like The Handmaid’s Tale before it, The Testaments is going to some intriguing places.

Lucy Halliday bounces back from her past episode, which we felt lacked new insights about her character. In “Broken,” she is on point from the start. Halliday’s performance is surprisingly funny and full of tension. We can feel her frustration growing. “Broken” certainly carries meaning for every character in the group, but for Daisy, she’s reached a breaking point with both Gilead and Mayday.

Chase Infiniti also delivers an incredibly nuanced performance this time out. Given Gilead and her role as a Green, the repressive culture forces the girls to hold back. Yet Infiniti is like a live wire in “Broken,” communicating so much disdain and horror in her eyes. “Broken” gives us a different shade of PTSD for the character while also allowing Infiniti to play a devious, downright horrible character at other moments.

We also get some great moments for Blanchard. The actress has felt a little underused this season, and hopefully, “Broken” is a move in the right direction. She has far more to offer the show than simply being bitter offscreen, and the showcase of her vulnerability was much needed.

After “Broken,” we’re preparing for an explosive episode 9. Can The Testaments use this to launch the all-out war that has been promised? Will the girls finally get insight into Aunt Lydia’s double life as a spy? Or will Daisy do something unhinged and jeopardize the entire mission? Somehow, all of these things can be true at once, and episode 9 has the chance to be the best of the season.

The Testaments releases new episodes every Wednesday on Hulu and Disney+. “Broken” was released on May 13, 2026.
