Grown Ups 3: Adam Sandler Officially Returning for Sequel After 13 Years

After years of speculation, Adam Sandler‘s Grown Ups 3 has finally commenced development at Netflix (via Variety). Even though the sequel was a roaring box office hit like the original despite being panned by critics, the IP, which has collectively grossed over $500 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), has remained dormant for over a decade.

Director Kyle Newacheck, who previously helmed another Sandler-driven legacy sequel, Happy Gimores 2, will be directing the threequel from a script by Sandler and his writing collaborator Tim Herlihy. It appears the streaming success of Happy Gilmore 2 might’ve fast-tracked the Sandler-led sequel, as Herlihy previously noted (via THR):

A release date for the sequel, however, hasn’t been disclosed yet, nor have any details surrounding the movie’s plot.

Will the OG Cast Return in Grown Ups 3?

The success of Grown Ups and its sequel can be largely attributed to the movie’s ensemble and their chemistry, which helped the general moviegoer overlook an otherwise unfocused plot. But considering the two movies were released within the span of three years, it’ll be interesting to see if the main cast reprises their roles in the legacy follow-up over a decade later.

Although reports suggest that the core cast members, which include Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, and Rob Schneider, are expected to return, the streamer has yet to confirm the cast for the threequel. It’s also unclear whether Salma Hayek will join Adam Sandler and co. for the franchise revival at Netflix.

Nevertheless, the success of Happy Gilmore 2 suggests this will be another streaming hit for Sandler. But given the hefty box office grosses of the previous two installments in the franchise, it’s a shame that the legacy follow-up won’t be making it to the big screen.
