The Rookie Season 8 Finale Ending Explained: What Happens to Tim & Lucy in the Cliffhanger Finale?

1 hour ago 8

The high-stakes finale of The Rookie Season 8 brought back one of the season’s biggest villains. Every time Heath Everett appears on the screen, we know that things are going to go very wrong. In the 18th and final episode of the season, titled The Bandit, the LAPD puts all its force into escorting Everett to the court. We also get the whole Chenford proposal story arc, which started back in the sixteenth episode.

Tim is still thinking things through while being nervous about Lucy finding out, since the whole station knows that he is going to propose. However, a small mistake during the Everett operation adds to Tim’s stress about the proposal. Showrunner Alexi Hawley also brings back his younger son, Beckett Hawley, who plays Dash in the show.

The episode also puts the focus back on the actual rookie of the Mid-Wilshire station, Miles Penn. When the outside world goes into chaos, Penn has to face another troublesome day at the station. He is sidelined after a horrible incident, which could potentially jeopardize his FTO programme. Will Penn get kicked off the team after his multiple second chances?

Did Heath Everett Escape Custody in The Rookie Season 8 Finale?

Heath Everett is turning out to be another formidable villain to John Nolan and the LAPD-FBI joint task force. Jeffrey Vincent Parise’s notorious war criminal already proved his ruthlessness when he escaped the FBI’s custody after hijacking a plane full of prisoners in the episode, Grand Theft Aircraft. When this finale episode begins, we learn that Everett has just added Malcolm to his long list of attorneys. After the Liam Glasser case, Malcolm is officially on Mid-Wilshire’s watchlist for his alleged actions.

Agent Garza and Captain Grey can sense that Everett is up to something. Grey calls Tim and the entire cavalry to accompany Everett’s transport. While the team anticipated an attack, they were still not able to stop Everett’s plans. It is hard to counter a plan when it involves helicopter-borne trained shooters and a giant magnet that can hijack a car. Over-the-top? Yes! But it’s The Rookie, and you have to go big and bonkers in a season finale.

After Everett’s escape, the LAPD and FBI put their entire manpower into the hunt for Everett. Remember when Everett offered Tim a bribe, and he refused, and Everett threatened him? That whole storyline is about to become very crucial! Wesley, who is in private practice now, is hired to handle this charge by Malcolm. He pisses off Tim in his attempt to represent Everett. We definitely do not like this side of Wesley!

Malcolm is cornered by Garza and Angela into giving up any information on Everett, and Nolan finds pieces of a drone at the crime scene. Using these, the FBI and LAPD figure out Everett’s location and plan a stealth operation to bring him back into custody. Sadly, the whole operation on the ship felt skippable.

Bailey joins Nolan in this operation, which felt kind of forced and just another way to show ‘Bailey is a badass’. The mission is quick, as the team doesn’t face much resistance as they get to Everett. It is a finale, and the series needed to show Nathan Fillion‘s heroics. So we get a sequence where Nolan fights off several shooters and escapes in a vintage car, which gives the episode its name.

Even after all these daring stunts, he needs Bailey’s help in the final minute. Everett is back in custody, and for some reason, he is specifically mad at Tim for his situation.

In the commotion of Everett’s escape, Tim loses the engagement ring. It was stupid of him in the first place to keep it in his pocket instead of carrying it in a box. Not only did he have to worry about Everett’s prison break, but he also had to search for the ring. Luckily, at the end of the episode, Angela finds it in his shop and brings it back to him.

He took Lucy to the beach, where we all got the moment we had been waiting for. Tim proposed, and Lucy said yes. But the show has a track record of ruining the big moments for its characters. Remember Angela’s wedding? Reminiscent of that arc, which killed off Jackson, the Chenford proposal immediately goes south. A couple approaches them, appearing to congratulate them, but goes on to sedate them. Before Tim loses his consciousness, the woman says to him, “Everett says hi.”

We did not expect that cliffhanger finale. But with a ninth season confirmed, the show needed to raise the stakes for the season premiere next year. This is not a proposal that Tim and Lucy want to remember. The finale threw another major obstacle in the Chenford romance. Will the trauma of this incident help them bond or lead them to grow apart? We are worried!

Is Miles Penn Leaving Mid-Wilshire?

One of the biggest criticisms of the season was the lack of focus on Miles Penn, especially since he is the only one fitting the title of the show now. Deric Augustine was absent for a couple of episodes this season. His storylines felt like a rollercoaster ride. He appears to be doing so well in one episode, but falls right back down in the next. Compared to Celina, who had a solid arc as a rookie, Miles felt significantly underdeveloped in the show.

When he was removed from Nolan’s training and put under Harper, it felt like a dynamic that could’ve thrived. However, the show abandoned that storyline as quickly as it started. In this episode, Miles is left in charge of booking when others are pulled into the Everett manhunt. Things go horribly wrong for Miles when a violent perp in the booking cell tries to shoot his way out with a gun, killing a fellow perp and injuring an officer. While Miles prevented him from harming more people, he is sidelined pending investigation.

Miles was already concerned that no one seemed to address the fact that it was his last day as a rookie. He believed that this incident could be the final straw that kicks him off the squad. However, he is cleared of the incident, and Harper even offers to talk to Tim about him completing the FTO program early. It is likely that we would see Penn as an officer in the next season. It also means that Mid-Wilshire might be getting some new rookies next season.
