Apple TV’s Stick was one of my favorite TV shows of 2025. Their ability to capture the world of golf for fans and non-fans was perfectly accompanied by Owen Wilson’s brilliant performance. So, I was skeptical about the announcement of The Hawk, and whether they could deliver on that same level. That said, the creators approached this much more as a comedy than the creators of Stick did, and it was for the better.

Lonnie Hawkins reminds you of a modern-day John Daly. For those who aren’t familiar with Daly, think of a loudmouth, profanity-filled, beer-drinking, outlandish character. Hawkins deep down knows the end is near but can’t come to grips with that. For that reason, he uses anyone and everyone to help get him back on the tour. As a result of his caddy passing away, he enlists a random stranger, Sam, to be his new caddy.

Ivan Drago, Shooter McGavin, and Ernie McCracken: every sports movie or series needs a perfect opposition/villain. Enter Golden Fisk, an arrogant and cocky golfer who is on top of his game. Of course, he stands in the way of Hawkins and that final major title. Luke Wilson is quite the perfect opposite of Ferrell. Like much of the show, Wilson plays that villain, but how he leans into the goofiness of Fisk is where he thrives the best.

There were a few little things that made this ride smooth. The soundtrack is perfect. From Hall & Oates to Huey Lewis & The News to Van Halen, the music team brought the hits. The montages with Hawkins making the comeback sprinkled in with these songs bring layers to the character. I also thought this was paced brilliantly. They focused on the important pieces of the story without adding too many unnecessary components. Each episode flies by, allowing for an easy and digestible binge.

Is The Hawk worth watching?

Yes, this is 100% worth checking out. If you are a fan of Will Ferrell, golf, comedy, or all three, The Hawk is an off-the-wall, hilarious comedy series that hits a hole-in-one. The writing team puts together quite a ride that is immersive into the world of golf while newbies (like me) can enjoy the ride without the extensive knowledge of the game. Tune in for Will Ferrell, but stay for Luke Wilson and Fortune Feimster killing it in supporting roles.
