SUMMARY

  • James Cameron and Linda Hamilton got attached romantically after Terminator 2.
  • While the duo tied the knot in '97, they divorced shortly afterwards.
  • Their separation was seemingly linked to Suzy Amis, whom Cameron met during his time on Titanic.

When it comes to penning strong and formidable female leads, few do it better than James Cameron and the first two Terminator releases stand as a testament to it. But it wasn’t the audience alone who was wowed by Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor, as Cameron himself fell in love with the character, and in turn, Hamilton, which contributed to their relationship.

Although the two would end up tying the knot in ’97, their relationship briefly ended after the Avatar filmmaker crossed paths with one Titanic star, Suzy Amis.

Interestingly, after Linda Hamilton and James Cameron hit it off during the second Terminator flick, the latter divorced his third wife Kathryn Bigelow to pursue a relationship with the Sarah Connor actor. Even though the duo ended up walking the aisle in ’97 after welcoming a daughter together, their brief marriage concluded after Cameron took an interest in Titanic star Suzy Amis, with whom he is married to this date.

While history did repeat itself, as Cameron and Hamilton parted ways on an expensive note, the Terminator star recognized the signs, as she described Amis as someone who was waiting to swoop in (via The Daily Mail).

It’s interesting because while he was making Titanic, Suzy at that time was the gargoyle on the end of my bed, waiting to swoop in.

However, Amis wasn’t entirely responsible for the duo’s fallout, as the Dante’s Peak star later confessed that they were mismatched as a result of Sarah Connor.

Reflecting on her failed marriage with Cameron, she revealed that they were mismatched, adding (via The New York Times), “Everywhere he’s convex, I’m concave”. Further pondering on the subject, Hamilton speculated that the Avatar filmmaker might’ve actually fallen in love with Sarah Connor, to which Cameron seemingly corroborated.

I fell in love with her initially because I thought she was a little closer to Sarah than she actually is, but that doesn’t mean that much once you get to know somebody. I think we were just in this high-velocity spiral around each other for a long time. We were fascinated by each other

Considering that in real life, she wasn’t a carbon copy of her Terminator role, it makes sense why things didn’t work out between them in the end.

The Terminator is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
