We may be living in the golden age of television series, from jaw-dropping adaptations, revenge-fueled fantasies, gonzo thrillers, witty comedies, and dramedies, and the return of spectacular “dad” shows that set the gold standard in television programming.
Stars have been made, legends have been born, and “instant classic” has never been more relevant. Please read below FandomWire’s top 10 television series of 2024, and be sure to check out rankings of “The 20 Best Movies of 2024” and “The 10 Worst Movies of 2024,” as well.
FandomWire’s Top 10 Television Series of 2024!
10 Silo (Apple TV+)
Created by Graham Yost
The second season of the Apple TV+ streaming series Silo proves one undeniable truth — this Rebecca Ferguson-led show is the best science-fiction adventure series since Lost! A suspenseful, layered masterpiece, Silo presents world-building at its finest. Graham Yost’s (Justified) dystopian drama, based on the novel series by Hugh Howey, is riveting from start to finish!
9 Ripley (Netflix)
Created by Steven Zaillian
A full-blown noir masterpiece, Ripley is a masterclass in thought-provoking thrillers with substance. Zaillian’s adaptation has much to say about oppression, social classes, paranoia, obsession, and a keen sense of dark humor that brings spine-tingling tension. The result is a captivating thriller that unfolds like a novel because of its disciplined use of patience.
8. Masters of the Air (Apple TV+)
Created by John Shiban and John Orloff
The Austin Butler-led miniseries Masters of the Air is a remarkable achievement! The third chapter in The Greatest Generation Trilogy, Masters of the Air, depicts some of the most awe-inspiring and most excellent air combat scenes ever made by exploring how these airmen find themselves flying so close to heaven amid the depths of hell.
7 Nobody Wants This (Netflix)
Created by Erin Foster
I wrote that Nobody Wants This is a thoroughly funny, charming, and sexy new streaming series where the laughs come fast, the sparks fly, and it reveals an unexpectedly big, compassionate heart. Adam Brody is this year’s breakout television star and is in the best role of his career.
6 3 Body Problem (Netflix)
Created by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo
3 Body Problem is a science fiction saga that ignites the mind, body, and soul! Hundreds of shows claim to have “world-building,” but few accomplish this. Writers David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo employ spectacular world-building, exploring connections between physics and philosophy and moral grey areas in between.
5 Creature Commandos (Max)
Created by James Gunn
James Gunn’s Creature Commandos embraces his unique horror-thriller sensibilities. His style is furiously funny, devilishly cool, and savagely biting in its commentary on the oversight and abuse of government power. You can’t think of another filmmaker who could bring a story like this to such vivid light.
4 Pachinko (Apple TV+)
Created by Soo Hugh
Like Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, Pachinko proves we are in the golden age of television story adaptation, bringing the extraordinary and celebrated novel to life. Pachinko is a show that profoundly consumes you and should be savored for its emotional depth and rich storytelling.
3 Fallout (Prime Video)
Created by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet
The most significant video game adaptation of all time, Fallout, is a big, wicked, and totally rad video game adaptation and streaming’s next big monster hit. Jonathan Nolan’s series has stunning production value and great performances and is a rollercoaster ride of action-packed absurdity.
2 Shōgun (FX)
Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks
As I wrote earlier this year, all the way back to the spring of 2024, the performances by Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai will become iconic in time. Shōgun is a series bigger and more ambitious than most features. You may not see a better series all year or in the next few. Well, except for the one below.
1 The Penguin (Max)
Created by Lauren LeFranc
The Penguin is the year’s very best series! A criminally cunning must-watch, this Colin Farrell series is the best mob series since The Sopranos and the best comic book show ever made. The Penguin is an enthralling, brutal, visceral crime saga. Colin Farrell gives an iconic performance as the titular character, and Cristin Milioti is simply scintillating.
What a fantastic year for television! Narrowing such an extraordinary television year to the top 10 was challenging. Do you agree with the 20 on our list? Let us know in the comments!
