Gaga revealed that she drew inspiration from real-life tragedies she faced to portray the complex character who shares an obsessive and deadly relationship with the titular villain. Moreover, Gaga also did not seek advice from former actress Margot Robbie who previously portrayed the character in the DCEU. Here is what Gaga said about her upcoming role in Joker 2.

Lady Gaga Reveals Real-life Tragedy Inspired Harley Quinn Role in Joker 2

Stefani Germanotta, better known by her stage name, Lady Gaga is one of the most celebrated music artists of all time. She will appear in the upcoming film Joker 2, playing the role of Harleen “Lee” Quinzel / Harley Quinn, loosely based on the DC Comics character of the same name.

During an interview with Jake’s Takes, Gaga spoke about her work in the movie, playing a character with mental health issues. She was asked whether, like Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenix, and her own character, she too experienced a tragedy that led to her changing her persona.

Something really bad happened to me when I was a kid and I think that made me create a persona. To answer your question really honestly that actually really informed my character.

Gaga made the above statement, explaining that Harley Quinn is a product of a broken place within Lee similar to how her traumatic childhood experience led to her creating the Lady Gaga persona.

The tragedy Gaga is referring to is likely the bullying she faced during her schooling years. She has also cited the bullying as the start of her days as Lady Gaga. Moreover, the singer-actress also faced sexual assault when she was nineteen, which might have also influenced her performance in the movie. Ultimately, Gaga clearly drew inspiration from her real life while playing the complex Harley Quinn.

Margot Robbie Hasn’t Spoke to Laday Gaga on Playing Harley Quinn in Joker 2

Before Gaga, actress Margot Robbie became synonymous with the role of Harley Quinn, playing the character in several DCEU installments. During an interview, Robbie was asked whether she had discussed the role with Gaga ahead of the latter’s debut in Joker 2.

I actually haven’t spoken to her about it. I almost don’t want to know so I can save it for the surprise when I get to see the movie.

Robbie made the above comment (via Entertainment Weekly), explaining that she and Gaga had not discussed the character they share in common. However, the Barbie star expressed excitement at Gaga taking over the role.

At the same time, Robbie also revealed that she was eager to see Gaga’s take on the character and had no doubts that the latter would crush the part. Therefore, it is safe to say that Robbie has no qualms about Gaga portraying a character she popularized in live-action media. However, Robbie cast doubts on returning as Harley Quinn for James Gunn’s new DCU.

Joker 2 is slated to release in theaters on October 4, 2024.
