Space Marine 2

SUMMARY

  • Space Marine 2's developers are considering adding Chaos Marine content based on fan requests.
  • Implementing Chaos Marines would require significant development effort, including new animations and balancing.
  • The potential DLC could offer a fresh perspective on the game's narrative and gameplay.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war – and potentially, a chance to play as the bad guys. Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 players have been clamoring for more content since the game’s groundbreaking release, and it seems Saber Interactive might be listening.

A recent exchange between the game’s Creative Director and a fan has sparked hope for a Chaos Marines DLC that could let players experience the other side of the eternal conflict.

While players have battled against Thousand Sons Chaos Space Marines, including Rubric Marines and Exalted Sorcerers, the allure of playing as these formidable foes has been tempting. Could we soon see Khorne Berzerkers rampaging through loyalist ranks or Noise Marines blasting enemies with sonic weaponry? The possibility is more tangible than ever.

Chaos Reigns: The Potential for New Content

Oliver Hollis-Leick, Creative Director for Space Marine 2 at Saber Interactive, has been engaging with fans on social media, addressing questions and suggestions with refreshing candor. In a recent Twitter exchange, he hinted at the possibility of exploring the Chaos perspective:

There are a lot of requests for more Chaos customisation so it's likely we'll add it eventually. Chaos stories would be cool but we'll have to see. I'd love to tell their side of the story!

— Oliver Hollis-Leick (@MocapVeteran) September 15, 2024

This intriguing response from a key developer is enough to set the Warhammer 40K community abuzz with speculation. The idea of a Chaos Marines DLC isn’t just exciting for the chance to play as the bad guys—it could also provide a fresh perspective on the game’s narrative.

Hollis-Leick’s enthusiasm is clear:

100% – if we can find the resources then it would be amazing

However, bringing Chaos to life isn’t as simple as slapping some spikes on existing models:

We have a partial set right now, but we'd need everything for the Tyranids too. Plus all the VO for the specific missions would need a lot of content.

This insight from Hollis-Leick highlights the dedication of the development team to creating an authentic and immersive experience. It also suggests that if a Chaos Marines DLC does come to fruition, it will be a substantial addition to the game rather than a mere cosmetic update.

The Future of Space Marine 2 Content

While the prospect of a Chaos Marines DLC is exciting, it’s important to remember the challenges involved. Space Marine 2‘s campaign, while praised for its intense action and faithful representation of the Warhammer 40K universe, isn’t particularly long. The game’s longevity comes from its PvE-focused Operations mode, which ties into the main campaign in clever ways.

And adding Chaos Marines as playable characters to this mode would require more than just new skins. As Hollis-Leick points out:

It’s actually not that simple. We’d need new animations, proper balancing, full voiceover and script for the chaos marines to make them feel real. It’s a big job.

— Oliver Hollis-Leick (@MocapVeteran) September 16, 2024

Despite these challenges, the potential for a Chaos Marines DLC is tantalizing. Imagine storming Imperial strongholds as a Chaos Terminator or infiltrating loyalist ranks as an Alpha Legion operative. It is an understatement to say that the possibilities are vast.

For now, fans will have to content themselves with upcoming Season 2 content, which promises a new Operations map and more. But with Saber Interactive’s strong post-release support and willingness to engage with the community, playing as Chaos Marines might just become a reality.

What do you think? Would you be excited to play as Chaos Marines in Space Marine 2? What other factions would you like to see added to the game? Let us know in the comments below!
