The SIU said officers were dispatched to investigate a reported break-and-enter and vehicle theft in North York on Aug. 9, 2023.

Preliminary information suggested the stolen vehicle, as well as other stolen vehicles, were tracked to a plaza on Underhill Dr. near Lawrence Ave. E. and Don Valley Pkwy.

The SIU said two of the vehicles, including the vehicle initially reported as stolen, left the scene.

The agency said there was an interaction with a man in one of the remaining vehicles at the plaza and an officer discharged his firearm at the vehicle.

No one was injured as a result of the firearm being discharged, the agency said.

Following the completion of the investigation, the SIU said Cst. Andrew McDonald was charged with careless use of a firearm.

“As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation,” the agency said in a statement.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates when police are involved in an incident that results in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
