Now on the cafe’s tiny counter, crowded with a multitude of tempting pastries, are sweet potato cupcakes topped with pear compote, cream cheese icing and nut crumble, cream-cheese-filled pumpkin loaves and apple cider doughnuts.

The latter are my favourites of the batch.

The made-daily doughnuts are cakey but not overly dense. They’re not too sweet, either, and they please with a lightly spicy, absolutely autumnal finish. Best of all, each doughnut wraps itself around a soft chunk of caramelized apple, hiding a treat inside a treat, you might say.

Red Door calls itself a small-batch bakery, and that’s certainly true of the doughnuts. No more than 10 of them arrive each morning from Red Door’s off-site kitchen, says manager Kerry McRae. Some of the baked goods are also bound for Red Door’s sister business in Chelsea, Café Palmier.

When the Ottawa Citizen’s photographer was busy taking the photos to go with this article, a man in line at the cafe asked hopefully: “Do you need a picture of somebody biting into one?” Hey! That’s my job!
