Summer 2026 did not simply deliver a strong anime lineup; it felt like the season kept pulling another ace from its sleeve. That variety is exactly why Summer 2026 deserves to be remembered as a particularly strong anime season. Even the tenth-place show brought something distinctive to the table rather than simply filling space.
The result is a season where “best” is not synonymous with “biggest”, and where several of the most memorable surprises came from anime that had no interest in following the usual playbook.
10 The Cat and the Dragon Proves Fantasy Still Has Surprises Left
Nekoryuu from The Cat and the Dragon. [Credit: OLM]The Cat and the Dragon gave us many reasons that this ray of sunshine is 2026’s best anime: a fantasy about a dragon raised by magical cats that revealed how much emotional weight could hide inside its cozy premise. Uncle Wings protects his adopted family while slowly becoming less hostile toward humans, and the smaller stories let the supporting cats become a real community.
Episode 11, “Final Resting Place,” centered on Pompora confronting the end of his life, while Episode 12 sent the dragon to a royal festival and let his dignity crack into adorable embarrassment. It ranks tenth not because it lacks heart, but because its intimate storytelling is less ambitious than the nine anime above it.
9 The Elusive Samurai Season 2 Makes History Look Dangerously Fun
The Elusive Samurai Season 2 made medieval history look like the most dangerous playground imaginable. Tokiyuki’s escape-driven fighting style remained the series’ secret weapon, and Summer 2026 expanded his world through Yasuie, Mima, and the journey to Kyoto.
The Elusive Samurai balanced gorgeous action with expressive comedy, helped by lively themes. It takes ninth because its craft is consistently strong, but its summer run builds toward larger conflict rather than delivering a payoff as overwhelming as the entries above.
8 Tanya the Evil Returns With Another Brutal War of Wits

[Credit: NUT]Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2 returned with a combination of military strategy, political maneuvering, and a tiny commander who treats war like an office promotion. Tanya’s unit fought through the southern front, Zettour used himself as a decoy, and the Empire eventually shifted toward diplomacy as the battlefield became harder to sustain.
The new season tightened the screws as Rudersdorf and Zettour considered drastic measures, and put Tanya on a dangerous mission to defend Rudersdorf’s plane from assassination. It ranks eighth because the season’s broader political machinery sometimes overshadowed Tanya’s personal battlefield brilliance.
7 Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You Makes Romance Feel Real
Sasaki and Yamada from Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You. [Credit: Asahi Production]Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You pulled off the rarest romance trick: making tiny moments feel enormous. Sasaki’s exhausted office life and his secret smoking breaks with Tayama gradually became a portrait of loneliness, kindness, and adult connection rather than a race toward a confession.
The anime’s 12-episode run leaves viewers with an ending that’s open to interpretation, which matches its mellow nighttime atmosphere. It ranks seventh because its character intimacy is exceptional, but its deliberately small scale cannot quite compete with the season’s heavier dramatic and visual showcases.
6 Jaadugar Turns Mongolian History Into a Gripping Anime Epic

It follows Sitara from captivity and grief into a dangerous life of knowledge, espionage, and revenge around the Mongol Empire. By the finale, Sitara outmaneuvers Boraqchin, searches for Töregene, and receives a wager from Ögedei, turning intellect into her sharpest weapon. Only a few anime are as dark as Jaadugar.
It ranks sixth because its originality and atmosphere were extraordinary, but its quieter political rhythm makes it less explosive than the entries above.
5 Slime Season 4 Shows Why Rimuru Still Rules Isekai
A still from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. [Credit: 8Bit]That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4 became one of Summer 2026’s biggest fantasy flexes by expanding Rimuru’s world without abandoning the core political machinery. The summer stretch moved from Granville’s schemes into the Chronoa storyline, where Chloe’s Time Traveler sends Hinata’s soul into the past. By “The Hero Awakens,” Rimuru is fighting to save Chloe and Hinata while Raphael interferes with Chronoa’s Unlimited Imprisonment.
That is classic Slime: gigantic lore, diplomacy, god-tier abilities, and an absurd number of moving parts. It takes #5 because its world-building is superb, but its sprawling mythology can dilute the emotional punch that the four higher-ranked shows sustain more consistently.
4 The Ghost in the Shell 2026 Reinvents a Cyberpunk Classic

Science SARU rebuilt Masamune Shirow’s world with a fresh visual language, while Motoko Kusanagi and Batou confronted cybercrime, corporate conspiracies, and the return of the Puppet Master.
The finale left Kusanagi reduced to a cyberbrain before the supposedly destroyed Puppet Master contacted her directly. It ranks fourth because its reinvention was daring, even if its emotional investment stayed cooler than the top three.
3 Re:ZERO Makes Subaru’s Endless Suffering Impossible to Ignore

The second cour, The Recapture Arc, pushed Subaru and his allies deeper into their expedition of the Pleiades Watchtower. The party navigated the deadly trials against Reid Astrea. Moreover, Subaru’s new Authority, Cor Leonis, became crucial to supporting Ram while Emilia faced the Dragon Volcanica’s bizarre final trial. The season kept its signature tension intact: victories always arrived carrying another bill to pay.
It ranks third because its character writing and emotional pressure were superb, but its dense, continuity-heavy storytelling demands more patience than the two anime above it.
2 Mushoku Tensei Turns Its Isekai Legacy Into Pure Fantasy Gold
A still from Mushoku Tensei [Credits: Studio Bind]Mushoku Tensei’s third season turned its polished fantasy machinery toward a much darker question: what happens when Rudeus glimpses a future he desperately wants to prevent? The summer cour built around Eris’s return, family pressure, political danger and increasingly frightening consequences, culminating in Episode 14, “Resolve,” where Rudeus acts after seeing a possible future.
The season also used shifting openings and Mika Nakashima’s ending to underline its emotional transitions. Studio Bind’s patient character animation remains a major strength, letting domestic scenes carry as much weight as battles. It lands at #2 because its character drama and fantasy depth were exceptional, even if Bleach delivered the bigger cultural and shonen event.
1 Bleach TYBW Part 4 Proves It Rules Shonen Battlefield
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity (Part 4) had the impossible job of ending one of shonen’s defining sagas, and Summer 2026 showed exactly why it still commands the battlefield. The Ichigo–Yhwach endgame escalated from despair to spectacle, while Uryu’s Antithesis and Tsukishima’s intervention gave the climax emotional and tactical weight.
Aizen finally entering the fight was pure cinematic electricity, but the bigger win was how the season kept its huge cast relevant without losing Ichigo’s personal stakes. Even with the final two episodes delayed to October for quality improvements, its summer run delivered the strongest blend of legacy, scale, character payoff, and visual ambition on this list.
