Stranger Things star and Vancouver native Finn Wolfhard popped up in the final episode of the Malcolm in the Middle sitcom revival.

Wolfhard showed up in the finale as an event planner tasked to help plan Hal’s (Bryan Cranston) and Lois’ (Jane Kaczmarek) 40th anniversary party. The four-part Vancouver-shot miniseries Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is available to stream on Hulu.

According to Deadline, Wolfhard’s cameo came about after Malcolm in the Middle creator Linwood Boomer learned that Wolfhard, 23, is a big fan of the original series, which aired on Fox from 2000 to 2006.

“His agent called us and said, ‘Can Finn visit the set?’ We go, ‘S — t, yeah,’” Boomer told Deadline in an interview. “He loves the show, he’s such a big fan of the show, and we’re like, ‘Well, there’s a part we haven’t cast yet. Does he wanna do that? I mean, it’s a small part.’ And he said, ‘F — k yeah, he wants to do it.’”

The show’s executive producer Tracy Katsky told Deadline that Wolfhard — who was born in Vancouver — was “an absolute doll” to work with.

“He was so great. He’s so charming. It’s so fun to watch him do comedy,” she said. “He was so cute with Lois, Jane Kaczmarek. He was standing there and he kept forgetting to deliver his lines, because he was just so overwhelmed that Lois was screaming at him and he’d kind of go, ‘Oh wait, I have to act. OK, OK.’ It was so cute.”

Wolfhard, who hosted Saturday Night Live on Jan. 17, played Mike Wheeler in all five seasons of the Netflix hit Stranger Things. Recently he starred alongside fellow Vancouverite Gabriel LaBelle in the Canadian comedy film Crash Land that had its world premiere at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival on March 13. Wolfhard is also one of the investors who helped to save the Park Theatre on Cambie St.

The new Malcolm in the Middle miniseries picks up with Malcolm (played by Frankie Muniz), after more than a decade away from his family, returning home for his parents’ anniversary party.

Aside from Munoz, Cranston and Kaczmarek, the series also reunited original cast members Justin Berfield as Reese and Christopher Masterson as Francis. Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey, did not return. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark took on the role of Dewey for the revival.
