Taylor Sheridan’s stories capture the vibe of the Western pretty well, and there is one project that the writer/director should get his hands on asap. Supernatural, over its fifteen-season run, managed to create a franchise ripe with opportunities for a spin-off, one which Taylor Sheridan would be the perfect fit to adapt.
Samuel Colt, a demon hunter in the Wild West, was the star of an episode that left fans pretty intrigued about the nature of demon hunting in the history of the United States. Samuel Colt was a popular enough character that a spin was being discussed about the character, however, it never came to fruition, but that does not mean that the spin-off could get a second shot at being developed, especially with shows like Landman and Yellowstone gaining popularity.
Samuel Colt would make a brilliant Supernatural spin-off
Supernatural as a show had a lot of opportunities to expand beyond the story of the Winchester brothers. Samuel Colt was one of the most popular choices for such a spin-off, setting the story in the Wild West, with demons to spice up the story.
Samuel Colt was based on an actual historical figure, the creator of the Colt revolver, which, as is the case with a slew of firearms, is present in the show. Sam and Dean already gave audiences a taste of how a Western horror spin-off would play out, given that the duo traveled back through time to assist the old-timer in dealing with a Pheonix.
Samuel Colt would be a great protagonist for a prequel series, one that expands the world of Supernatural beyond the Winchesters, bringing one of the biggest criticisms of the show, down: that it does not do other hunters justice. Further, having Taylor Sheridan helm the project could mean that the show’s relevance factor could be revived, as the writer/director seems to be getting pretty popular with the mainstream audience.
Supernatural has so much potential for other spin-offs
There are a slew of ways in which the world of Supernatural could be further expanded with a slew of spin-offs. There have been various attempts to get a lot of spin-offs off the ground such as the Wayward Sisters and Supernatural: Bloodlines, but for whatever reasons, The CW decided to not go ahead with these shows. While there were some, like The Winchesters, which ended only after a season, that at least, managed to escape development hell.
There are a lot of characters and storylines in the show that could spawn a series of their own, which could be something that keeps Supernatural as a story alive in the public consciousness. However, with fifteen seasons and over 200 episodes, Supernatural has more than enough content to pull new viewers towards the show, should it want to.
Supernatural is streaming on Prime Video.
