Romano Schmidt understands Werder Bremen fans booing

Werder Bremen failed to secure their Bundesliga safety after a 3-1 home defeat to FC Augsburg.

Werder Bremen will enter the penultimate matchday of the season still looking for points after a home defeat to Augsburg kept them in the relegation battle. Daniel Thioune’s team will now most likely need to pick up points against Hoffenheim and/or Borussia Dortmund.

“We had set our sights higher, but we simply weren’t at it from the first second.,” said Romano Schmidt, who scored Werder’s solitary strike on Saturday. “We looked far too sluggish, and that can’t happen in a game of this importance. It’s very disappointing.”

Anton Kade’s first-half brace was followed by the disappointed home fans booing the team while they were heading to the dressing room. “The whistling at half-time today hurt a little, but I can understand it,” conceded the attacking midfielder.

“We didn’t reach the level we’d shown in the previous two matches,” reflected coach Daniel Thouine after the game as he urged his team to keep believing. “We’ve got some tough fixtures ahead, and we still need points. The fight isn’t over. It’s got a few more rounds to go.”
