The actor had shared a decade-long friendship with Suarez before they began dating in 2020, and they got engaged five years later.

Mitte proposed to Suarez on October 10, 2025, on what was reportedly her 30^th birthday and nearly a year before his death.

The proposal took place during an appearance at the 56^th annual Día del Sol benefit at Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad, California, for United Cerebral Palsy of San Diego, of which Mitte was an official ambassador.

Mitte told People Magazine, “I’m thrilled to have found my person, my partner in life who makes me want to be better, no matter what we’re doing.”

He continued, saying, “Kennedy is my everything, and I can’t wait to officially start our life together and see what adventures life takes us on next.”

In an Instagram post days after the engagement, he said that Suarez was the “greatest unconditional love no matter what we are going through, no matter what we are facing type love.”

He said he was grateful for the “love and kindness” he’d gotten over the years and that he couldn’t wait for his future with Suarez.

Mitte reportedly faced severe financial difficulties that sources suggest caused him no small amount of despair.

A source told Daily Mail that the actor was “nearly broke” and struggled to afford a nice wedding for Suarez, which “broke his heart.”

Fellow “Breaking Bad” co-star Aaron Paul took to social media to pay tribute to Mitte, who he said was an “inspiration for so many.”

“I am so sorry you were hurting, my friend. I wish we knew,” Paul wrote, per Deadline, recalling how Mitte always smiled and took every challenge he had to face with “such confidence and grace.”

Paul said that Mitte reminded him of Superman because of his “kindness and strength,” which he described as “blinding.”

“You were born into a world with challenges, but you never let any of that stand in your way,” Paul noted.

For the actor, Mitte’s death was “an absolute tragic loss.” Paul made sure to remind anyone who may be struggling that there is “far too much beauty in this world” and that “Life is so damn special.”
