RB Leipzig's winning home streak ended on Wednesday as they lost once again to Manchester City in the Champions League. Martin Demichelis’ men came from behind twice before Erling Haaland's 78th minute strike handed three points for the visitors.
“We really wanted to win this home game today,” Leipzig's fullback Ridle Baku said in a post-match interview with DAZN. “We'd been on a good run at home with a lot of victories, and we wanted to build on that today.
“But against an opponent like that, it really comes down to fine margins. We weren't 100 % there in those moments, and we didn't defend properly. But overall, I think it was a good team performance that we can build on.”
Baku is enjoying his best goalscoring season in Leipzig colors, despite playing only 15 minutes from the last three Bundesliga matches. The 28-year-old scored his 30th goal in professional football with the help of Gigi Donnarumma howler in Manchester City’s goal.
“It's always good when you can perform and get the opportunity to play,” Baku spoke about his achievement and the recent situation. “I'm obviously very happy about the goal. But the team's performance is more important to me personally. I would rather have had the three points today.”
Leipzig's remaining four games will be against teams currently sitting outside the top 16 as they will need to improve their record of three points from four matches. The eight-time Germany international continued his praise of Leipzig's confident display against the 2022/23 Champions League winners.
“Overall I'm really, really pleased with the performance. We definitely still have several Champions League games that we can win. As I said, there were a lot of positive things that we showed on the pitch today. Now it's simply about continuing to produce those things consistently.”
RB Leipzig won three games in the row before losing for the first time at RedBull Arena on Wednesday. They will hope to continue their perfect home record against an out-of-form Augsburg side before the upcoming international break.
"On Saturday, at home against Augsburg, we can do better and hopefully pick up the next three points.”
