Peter Cullen’s Final Optimus Prime Role Officially Confirmed for 40th Transformers Anniversary

Peter Cullen will voice Optimus Prime one final time in Optimus Prime: Awakening, a new 12-minute animated short created for the 40th anniversary theatrical return of The Transformers: The Movie. ScreenRant reports that the project contains Cullen’s final original voice performance as Optimus Prime, giving the anniversary event a significance no amount of remastering could manufacture.

Cullen died on August 26, 2026, at age 85, after more than four decades of being inseparable from the Autobot leader. Hasbro remembered him as the performer who helped generations understand “courage, sacrifice, and leadership,” while tracing Optimus’ compassionate authority back to advice Cullen received from his Marine veteran brother, Larry. For fans, that makes Awakening less like a bonus feature and more like a goodbye nobody knew they were about to receive.

Optimus Prime: Awakening will screen after select anniversary presentations of the 1986 movie. Hasbro describes it as a fully realized 12-minute animated short that builds upon the visual language and storytelling of the original film while looking toward the franchise’s future. Frank Welker also returns as Megatron and Soundwave, placing the franchise’s most famous hero and villain opposite each other one last time. Welker called working with Cullen again “a real gift” and said, “that voice and his heart and values will always be part of Optimus Prime.”

That reunion feels like more than simple nostalgia. Cullen and Welker helped define the voices fans still hear in their heads whenever Optimus and Megatron are mentioned, even after later films reinvented both characters with different performers. According to details released with the short, Cullen’s final performance reveals a deeper vulnerability in Optimus while retaining the strength and authority that defined his portrayal. For a character famous for speeches about sacrifice, ending Cullen’s tenure with something more intimate feels fitting.

The 40th Anniversary Brings Prime Full Circle

Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment are bringing The Transformers: The Movie back to theaters in 4K beginning September 17, 2026, on Transformers Day. The U.S. run was originally announced for September 17–21, although Fathom’s current listings now show select screenings continuing through October 1 (via Fathom Entertainment’s anniversary page).

The timing has a mischievous sense of history. Hasbro has branded the celebration an “Apology Tour,” openly acknowledging how the 1986 film traumatized young viewers by killing Optimus Prime. Forty years later, audiences will watch that famous death and then stay through the credits for Cullen’s final new performance as the same hero.

The original movie has long outgrown its poor theatrical start, becoming a cult favorite whose voice cast also included Orson Welles, Leonard Nimoy, Judd Nelson, Robert Stack, and Eric Idle. The anniversary could hardly have found a more poignant coda. Optimus Prime died on screen in 1986, returned again and again afterward, and now Cullen gets the last word four decades later.
