After entertaining us for decades with crime films, surreal films, action thrillers, mysteries, and more, legendary South Korean auteur Park Chan-Wook has set his sights on a whole new genre. It is a Western film titled The Brigands Of Rattlecreek, reports Deadline.
Park Chan-wook, known for landmark films such as Oldboy (2003), The Handmaiden (2016), and No Other Choice (2025), has gathered quite a motley of well-known Hollywood and international stars to populate the project. Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Tang Wei (most well-known for Chan-wook’s own Decision to Leave) play major roles in the movie.

One of the most intriguing parts of the news is that The Brigands of Rattlecreek is based on a Black List screenplay, and Chan-wook had been interested in working on it for more than a decade.
For those who don’t know, the Black List is an annual survey that highlights Hollywood’s top unproduced screenplays. Typically, scripts included in the list are deemed too distinctive or unconventional for major studios, which, as we know, tend to play it safe.
The now-seminal films such as Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds (2009) were Black List scripts before they became, well, immortal. The Brigands Of Rattlecreek is written by S. Craig Zahler, also known for directing Bone Tomahawk (2015). Now, this previously unproduced script can become one of Cannes’ hottest titles.
Why a Western Is Such a Fascinating Next Step for Park Chan-wook

What he is associated with is things like psychological cat-and-mouse games and vengeance. And yet, having a filmmaker who is both precise and audacious makes this project all the more compelling.
Westerns, as a rule, have been about mythmaking, justice, masculinity, violence, and memory. Sergio Leone-directed Clint Eastwood-starrer The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) is one good example that incorporated these elements. Now, those are things Park Chan-wook intimately understands.
