5 Reasons Gen V Getting Canceled Is a Good Thing for Prime Video’s VCU

Gen V, the spin-off series from the hit Amazon show, The Boys, is getting canceled after its second season. However, it’s mostly because the characters have outgrown their own show. However, this might be the best thing that happened in the Vought Cinematic Universe (VCU).

The spin-off series focused on a group of college students with superpowers who were preparing to join the Seven in The Boys. Its final season premiered back in September 2025. To prove that the cancellation is a good thing for Prime Video’s VCU, here are 5 reasons:

1 Gen V Characters Will Get Promoted, Not Canceled

In a statement, executive producers Eric Kripke and Evan Goldberg confirmed that this will not be the last we see of Gen V. They explained that the characters will be in The Boys Season 5 and other projects connected to the VCU. Their statement read (via Variety),

While we wish we could keep the party going another season at Godolkin, we’re committed to continuing the ‘Gen V’ characters’ stories in ‘The Boys’ Season 5 and other VCU projects on the horizon. You’ll see them again

This clearly means that the characters are promoted as they have already matured within their storylines in the show. The other VCU projects currently in development include The Boys: Mexico and Vought Rising. It will be interesting to see which Gen V characters will be in the final season of The Boys.

2 Gen V Held Back the VCU Narratively

Another spin-off, Vought Rising, is scheduled for release in 2027 (via IMDb), while The Boys: Mexico is in development. Meanwhile, the original series is in its final season, possibly setting the new characters to take the baton ahead. These storylines, endings, and setups of another story will likely lead to messy timelines.

Furthermore, there were threads of stories set up in the spin-off that will be connected in the parent show. This suggested that one show cannot be ignored while fans watch the other. The spin-off was connected enough, but not enough for fans to diligently watch it through and through. Cancelling the show makes room for the upcoming storylines, giving the VCU a clear direction towards the spin-offs.

3 Gen V‘s Viewership Didn’t Help Build The Fanbase

While Gen V had 424 million minutes of watch time during the week of September 15 (via The Wrap), the show still couldn’t solidify its position as its viewership dropped.

It failed to enter the charts again and maintain its momentum. A show that builds up its audience and drops off is not helping the fan base grow further. Prime Video made the right call in cancelling a show, indicating they could not cater to the already strong audience invested in the storylines of The Boys.

4 The Spotlight Will Shift to Vought Rising, The Boys: Mexico

Vought Rising is a spin-off of the characters Soldier Boy and Stormfront from The Boys, which is set in the 1950s. Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash are returning to their roles. Additionally, The Boys: Mexico, a live-action spin-off executive produced by Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, is also in development.

With Gen V‘s story continuing in the background, it would have led to audience whiplash. Expecting viewers to watch one timeline after another would be difficult. Cancelling the show provides clear focus on the upcoming spin-offs while giving the team more time to execute a The Boys-level masterpiece for the audience.

5 Proves VCU Knows Where to Step Back

Prime Video’s VCU, unlike other cinematic universes, does not let shows drag on despite having low performance. With The Boys on its last season, Gen V canceled, and Vought Rising and The Boys: Mexico on its radar, it surely seems to be a universe that has a clear plan.

Most shows would have experimented with dramatic or repetitive storylines to make it work; however, Prime Video has made a wise decision when it comes to Gen V. With hopes given by the executive producers that we will see more of the characters in The Boys and upcoming VCU projects, it remains to be seen how the characters will be introduced or fit into the timeline of the current events.

Despite its successful run, The Boys is heading towards its end on Prime Video with the fifth and final season. Kripke only planned five seasons’ storyline to complete it with justice, without letting it drag on. Now, it’s time for the upcoming projects and new faces to carry the VCU.
