Recalled pork, beef and goat products sold with fake USDA inspection labels

Hundreds of thousands of pounds of raw pork, beef and goat products sold across the United States are being recalled as they were never properly inspected, federal officials said Tuesday.

Star Meat Delivery Inc. in Lucama, N.C., is recalling approximately 167,639 pounds of the raw meat — that includes oxtail, beef short ribs, sliced ribeye, pork chorizo, ground pork and goat meat — according to a notice posted on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service website.

The recalled meat products, which were produced on various dates before Sept. 22, were shipped in bulk to distributor A&D Foods in Georgia for further distribution to retailers and restaurants nationwide, the USDA said.

Uninspected meat considered ‘unsafe to eat’

It also said the recalled products were sold with fake USDA inspection labels with a fake establishment number.

“Any product bearing the false establishment number ‘EST. 1363’ should be considered misbranded and unsafe to eat,” officials said.

The USDA said the problem was discovered during a routine check.

It said no reports of illness or injury linked to the recalled products have been reported.

“Food produced without inspection may contain undeclared allergens, harmful bacteria, or other contaminants that put consumer health and safety at risk,” the notice said.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. Retailers and restaurants are urged not to sell or serve these products. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” it added.

Recall list may expand

The USDA said retailers may have repackaged the product, applying their own stickers with pricing and safe handling instructions.

It said officials may update the recall product list and labels with additional items as more information becomes available.
