The Ottawa police are asking for the public’s help as they investigate an alleged hate-motivated assault that occurred on Saturday in the 100 block of Woodridge Crescent.

At about 3 p.m. on June 20, a male who had not been provoked approached a woman and uttered a racial slur before forcibly removing her hijab and throwing an umbrella at her, the Ottawa Police Service stated in a news release on June 21.

The suspect, who the victim did not know, then left the scene on foot, police said, adding that the woman was not physically injured.

The West Criminal Investigations Section and Hate Crime Unit are investigating, and anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the Police Reporting Unit at 613-236-1222, extension 7300, and reference case number 26-170255.
