After denying they’d deal Tkachuk, the Senators sent him to Florida Panthers in a deal on Sunday afternoon that we will see the club get three first-round picks and a second-round selection in return.

The belief is that the Senators will have the No. 9 and No. 25 selections this year, along with a first-round pick in 2029 and a second-round pick in 2030.

Sources say Tkachuk had indicated to the Senators that he had no plans to resign after his contract expired, which is why Steve Staios, the club’s president of hockey operations and general manager, decided to deal him to the Panthers in exchange for his brother, Matthew.

This trade won’t go over well with fans of the Senators. Tkachuk had two years left on his deal, but the Senators weren’t able to wrestle a player out of Florida. We’re led to believe they tried to get Carter Verhaghe or Anton Lundell from the Panthers, but nothing was doing.

Tkachuk met with Staios last month and told him he planned to play out his contract. Tkachuk had a full no-move close so he could control where he wanted to go. It’s believed the Minnesota Wild made a hard push, but in the end, Staios wanted to get assets he could use as trade chips.
