Despite this solid sense of protection of the innocent and protection of the law, Garp’s efforts to make the world a better place will remain unfulfilled for his own past wrongdoings! Some of those atrocious acts truly undermine his past noble endeavors, raising questions about the true nature of justice. But the major one was him forming an alliance with the Celestial Dragons!

Monkey D. Garp, the legendary Hero of the Marines, is renowned for his exceptional strength, intelligence, and unwavering dedication to justice. His achievements included rivalry against the famous pirate Gol D. Roger and defeating the infamous pirate Rocks D. Xebec who had posed a serious threat to world safety. Such achievements make Garp one of the most legendary figures in the history of the Marines.

However, beneath the heroism of Garp’s legacy lies a complex, troubled reality. He is a man who has committed both marvelous acts, protecting the innocent, while committing some of the most horrific atrocities. He was deeply involved in the Marines’ some of the most despicable activities, including the Ohara genocide and slave trading.

Moreover, he has consciously supported the stranglehold of the Celestial Dragons over the world and contributed to the suffering and oppression of thousands of innocent lives. The contrast between Garp’s heroic image and his harmfulness raises some deep questions about the true nature of heroism, morality, and the failures that allow these injustices.

Garp Also Failed to Protect His Son, Despite Being One of The Strongest

Although Garp is incredibly strong and well-respected as a Marine Vice Admiral, his absolute inability to protect those near and dear to him is his greatest failure. His son, Monkey D. Dragon, and grandson, Monkey D. Luffy, suffered both physical and emotional abuse during their formative years by Garp. Moreover, Garp’s inaction was absolutely despicable when the Marines brutally murdered his adopted son, Portgas D. Ace.

This turn of events enlightened how Garp prioritized his duty as a Marine over his familial responsibilities, leaving an indelible scar on his personal legacy. Garp’s decision to not take revenge for his son was, in itself, very painful. Despite his deep affection for his grandson, Garp’s sense of duty and loyalty to the organization he dedicated his life to prevented him from taking action. In saving a pirate, especially one related to him, he could have lost his position as Vice Admiral and perhaps even his own life. His painful choice reveals the strict confines of the Marines’ vision, in which his responsibility prevailed over his personal ties.

The One Piece anime is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
