The many mysteries of One Piece have slowly started to unravel with the story entering the finale saga. From the powers of the Five Elders to the revelation of Elbaph Island, all the foreshadowed enigmas of One Piece have taken center stage, but there are still a lot of mysteries that Oda needs to clear out before the final war that will conclude the series.
One such mystery that fans have been trying to figure out for the past 25 years is the origin of Nami, the navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates. According to the narrative, Nami was born in the Oykot Kingdom, and she was saved by Belle-mere, who brought her to the Cocoyasi village and raised her. However, her family history and her role in the story are still unknown.
Her ability to figure out the weather patterns and navigate through them along with her crew makes her history even more mysterious. But a One Piece theory explains her strange abilities and her role as the Dragon Sovereign in the story that will probably make her a crucial addition to the final war.
Nami’s origin has been a mystery for a long time
Nami is one of the very first characters introduced in One Piece. While the details about her past have been provided, they only tell about how she grew up, developed a love for navigation, learned to figure out weather patterns, and then went on to work for Arlong until Luffy saved her. But there is more to her story, and Eiichiro Oda has foreshadowed it multiple times.
From her underlying connection to Shirahoshi to her mysterious bloodline, the One Piece manga creator has hinted at the various aspects of her character but never really put focus on them. Therefore, it is safe to say that Nami holds more importance than being the navigator for the Straw Hat Pirates.
Also, she is one of the few Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece who have yet to get a decent power-up since the time skip. Thus, there is a possibility that her next power-up might come with an explanation about her lineage and her talent for weather and maps.
One Piece theory explains Nami’s role
According to a One Piece theory posted by @StrawhatUFO on X, Nami has a connection with Shirahoshi, Imu, and Flare from the One Piece prequel one-shot Monsters. The theory states that all of these connections point out that Nami has a special ability that allows her to talk to and control dragons who were first seen during the Punk Hazard arc.
Nami’s connection with Shirahoshi has already been a widely discussed topic within the fandom. But for Imu, Nami’s connection comes from the fact that Nami’s attacks, like Thunderbolt Tempo, which draw parallels from the weather, are quite similar to the one that Imu used, but only on a larger scale. Aside from that, Nami’s dream is to draw a map of the world just like the one that Imu had in chapter 1060.
For this theory, I’m going to draw upon Nami’s connection with three characters – Shirahoshi, Imu, and, a character you might not have heard about – Flare.
Based on these, I’ll share why I conclude her role could be…the Dragon Sovereign. pic.twitter.com/MV3dGVoUI3
Thus, it is safe to say that Imu has a similar power to Nami, which allows her to control the weather. The theory states that Nami also has a connection to Flare from Monsters, which is foreshadowed through her hair and the fact that Monsters is a canon story. In the one-shot, it is revealed that Flare’s cry (just like Shirahoshi’s) and the Dragon Horn summon the dragon that was slain by Ryuma.
In various mythologies, dragons are believed to control the weather, and it is quite possible that Oda referenced it in One Piece. Therefore, the theory states that the weapon that Imu uses to control the weather is probably the Dragon Horn, and Nami is the one who possesses the power to talk to the Dragons, just like Shirahoshi (with sea creatures) and Flare.
While the theory may sound bizarre, if it holds any credence within the One Piece narrative, it will not only explain Nami’s origins but also what her role will be in the final war that will most likely be against the World Government and their supreme leader, Imu.
