As the debut of One Piece live-action season 2 draws nearer, fans are anxious to know the casting of the characters who are yet to debut. So far, the series has received stellar casting as each of the main cast perfectly portrayed their characters. However, the casting of a major villain, Blackbeard, is yet to be revealed.
Netflix has the perfect actor at hand to cast as Blackbeard, someone who already has plenty of experience with the role, and it is none other than Ian McShane. After his legendary role in Pirates of the Caribbean, fans would love to see more of the actor’s evil side, and One Piece could be the receptacle everyone has been waiting for.
Ian McShane Might Receive a Bigger Role in Netflix’s One Piece Season 2
Season 1 of Netflix’s One Piece live-action opened with the voice of Ian McShane, introducing the concept of the franchise to newbie watchers. McShane’s familiar voice emphasized the mythic and fantastical nature of the series and it created a heartwarming scene for watchers. As season 2 of One Piece is soon to debut, a leak states that the actor might receive a bigger role in the series soon.
According to a reliable scooper, the showrunners of Netflix’s One Piece are interested in casting Ian McShane for a bigger role in the series. In fact, it might be time for the actor to play an actual character, and fans have already begun to speculate which one it might be.
Ian McShane has played the popular character of Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. He already has a grip on the ruthless pirate and his nature. Though the Blackbeard in One Piece is vastly different from the one in Pirates of the Caribbean, McShane is still one of the top contenders for the spot, given his experience and skills. If Netflix really casts McShane as Blackbeard, it could become one of the defining moments of the series as fans will get a glimpse of their comfort character once again.
Will Ian McShane Suit the Role of Blackbeard in Netflix’s One Piece?
Fans might be looking forward to Ian McShane returning to his famous role but in a different franchise, but some technical issues might arise if the casting is carried out. The biggest problem is that the ethnicities of One Piece‘s Blackbeard and Ian McShane are entirely different.
Marshall D. Teach, commonly referred to as Blackbeard, is one of the major antagonists of One Piece and a cruel pirate. He is a dark-skinned, tall man with a massive build. He also has prominent lips with thick and woolly hair. All of these indicate that Teach is better suited to be played by a dark-skinned man (which Ian McShane is not).
Despite fans’ longing for nostalgia, Netflix has to tread on thin ice. If they want an appropriate casting without insulting the original character, Ian McShane has no chance of being Blackbeard. He might be incorporated into the series as another character who might later make more sense as a narrator. It’s up to Netflix to decide whether they want to value nostalgia more or create a manga-accurate casting.
One Piece live-action is currently streaming on Netflix. The One Piece manga is available to read on Viz Media and the manga is streaming on Crunchyroll.
