The power levels of the Marines in One Piece saw a major shift post-time skip when two out of three Admirals were changed. As fans know, after the time skip, Aokiji went on to join the Blackbeard Pirates while Akainu went on to become the Fleet Admiral of the Navy. Thus, the Navy decided to appoint two other Admirals, Ryokugyu and Fujitora, through the World Military Draft.
They are indeed two of the strongest characters in One Piece, as they have shown a decent display of their Devil Fruit and Haki abilities. However, there was one other character who would have fit perfectly for the role of Admiral considering the fact that he defeated both Luffy and Blackbeard in the past. This character is none other than Magellan, the former warden and the current vice warden of Impel Down in One Piece.
Magellan was a proper beast as he single-handedly tried to defend Impel. Down from a swarm of pirates, he has one weakness that makes it impossible for him to get promoted to such an important rank in One Piece. This weakness is his severe diarrhea that is caused by his habit of eating poison.
The only One Piece character who beat Luffy and Blackbeard
Magellan’s introduction in One Piece was quite uncanny considering the fact that he was generally used for comedic elements in the series. However, this impression changed instantly when Impel Down was attacked, and it was Magellan’s duty to save the prison and stop the prisoners from getting out. Thus, he revealed what he was truly capable of, shocking the entire fandom.
Magellan displayed the power of his Doku Doku no Mi, which is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that can control and produce different varieties of poison, making him a dangerous character. He used this power to take down Luffy and also the entire crew of Blackbeard Pirates (at the time) in One Piece. His power was so dangerous that it almost killed Luffy.
Defeating two future Emperors of One Piece single-handedly, and that too without breaking a sweat, is truly an appreciable thing. It is safe to say that he was at least at the level of Admirals in One Piece, and he could have been promoted to the rank if Luffy and Blackbeard had not succeeded in the end.
Magellan’s weakness that stopped him from becoming an Admiral
Although the reason behind Magellan’s demotion in One Piece after the Impel Down arc was his defeat and his inability to safeguard Impel Down, what stopped him from becoming an Admiral was evidently something else entirely. According to the general opinion of One Piece fans, Magellan’s disgusting weakness is the main reason why he could never have become an Admiral.
Magellan’s Devil Fruit powers are dangerous as they produce some of the most lethal poison. However, in order to produce and keep the strength of the poison, Magellan needs to consume high amounts of poison continuously.

This causes severe diarrhea, affecting his bowel movements, and because of that, most of his time in One Piece is spent on a toilet.
Thus, in order to maintain his dangerous power, Magellan needs to spend more than half of his time on the toilet in One Piece. And if he had been promoted to the ranks of Admiral, his weakness wouldn’t have allowed him to do his duties properly.
