West Kelowna RCMP said the man died after going off trail near the former Gladstone Mine close to the 4600 block of Ponderosa Road in Peachland.

“Preliminary investigation indicates the ATV left the trail, travelled down a steep embankment, and rolled before coming to rest against trees,” said RCMP Const. Ash Puri. “The rider succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be factors in the crash. The trails in the area are commonly used by off-road vehicles, and he was travelling with another rider before becoming separated.

The Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) was called to assist RCMP, the B.C. Coroners Service, and emergency responders in accessing the remote site to recover the rider and ATV.

The incident comes weeks after a separate ATV accident close to nearby Idabel Lake, just east of Kelowna, where one person died and two others were injured on July 3.

In June, two children were killed and three others injured after their side-by-side UTV rolled over on a rural road near the northern B.C. community of Pouce Coupe.

The driver, who was seven years old, was one of those killed, along with an eight-year-old passenger.
