FSV Mainz 05 have confirmed this afternoon that club captain Silvan Widmer has also extended his contract.

The 33-year-old, who has worn the Mainz jersey since the 2021-22 and the captain's armband for the last two seasons, will remain at the club.

This season, the right-back has made 39 appearances across all competitions scoring three goals and providing one assist.

Widmer becomes the third defender to sign a new contract at Mainz – both Stefan Bell and Danny Da Costa did similar earlier this week. 

“Silvan has become an invaluable player for us in recent years, both as a leader and captain. He also led by example in the past six months. 

"When we were under immense pressure, and contributed significantly to our successful second half of the season.

“We are delighted to continue working with him,” explained Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert.
