The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board says it’s “on course” for students to start classes at new Maplewood Secondary School in Stittsville next Tuesday.

A notice to students’ families on Wednesday said the final occupancy inspection by City of Ottawa officials was scheduled for Monday, “and we will provide an additional update later that day.”

The OCDSB school year started Sept. 3, but Maplewood was not ready to open its doors at that time, with the board saying the building was not yet up to code. The board then activated a contingency plan, with Grade 7 and 8 students temporarily moved to the former D.A. Moodie Intermediate School in Bells Corners and Grade 9 students scheduled for online classes.

To prepare for the expected opening next week, all students in Grades 7 to 9 “will be learning from home (asynchronous) under the teacher’s guidance” on Friday and Monday, the OCDSB told families in a letter last week.

The new school was originally scheduled to open in September 2023, but, like many projects, it was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic’s supply-chain issues and construction labour shortages. The completion date was pushed to the spring of 2024, but that timeline also proved overly optimistic.

One of Ottawa’s fastest-growing suburbs, Stittsville now has more than 52,000 residents. Until now, its public high school students had to bus to Richmond to attend South Carleton High School.
