Habs fans celebrated into the night Monday after Montreal’s overtime victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
Most fans leaving the area around the Bell Centre dispersed peacefully.
However, a small group had what he described as an “altercation” with officers, throwing trash bins and bottles at police, according to police spokesperson Manuel Couture.
Montreal police charged the group and deployed a chemical irritant on Peel St. near Ste-Catherine St. A police car could be heard issuing dispersal warning over loudspeakers.
As of midnight, the police operation was ongoing.
No arrests had been made.
