NOT IN THE MOOD
Usually John Snobelen is a practical, down-to-earth kind of guy. However, I think he got a bit ahead of himself in attributing the problems in Iran to Donald Trump’s hubris (“Mood disorders and world leaders behind deadly conflicts,” May 16). John ignores the fact that Iran is “the world’s greatest state sponsor of terrorism” and that it is led by a fanatical theocracy. By the same measure, if Hitler had been nipped in the bud, the Second World War could have been avoided.

PEACE OF MIND
A couple short comments on the insane chaos that has enveloped ‘our’ precious little blue planet. In regards to the current state of the world: So few are inflicting so much grievous pain and misery on so many innocent men, women and children. In regards to the possibility of global peace: Each one of us has an obligation to rationally seek out the truth and to act in a compassionate, empathetic manner toward others. You would think Homo sapiens, who are intelligent enough to cooperatively build a spacecraft that can carry astronauts to the moon and back, would instinctively be in awe of all the unbelievably diverse and complex lifeforms the Earth has nurtured during the last three billion years. It seems arrogantly foolish to think the magnificent pyramid of life was purposely built so we can stand on the top and blindly ignore the currently existing flora and fauna that make our lives possible.

BARS DOWN
Re “Jails set to expand” (Ling Hui, May 15): I have been complaining about the jail capacity for years. This is the best news I’ve heard. Kudos to whoever started this ball rolling. Is it enough? Time will tell about our inept bail system. Let’s work on our broken parole system as well.
