The attack began after police arrived to address 911 reports of an armed man seen in the window of a Hilton Hotel. Once on scene, however, they immediately came under fire from a gunman at ground level.

Benredouane leaves behind a young child and a pregnant wife, according to the president of the Montreal Police Brotherhood, Yves Francoeur, who shared the details while speaking to TVA Nouvelles Tuesday morning.

A GoFundMe page set up in his name by Ebuzer Kayhan with the aim of supporting Benredouane’s family has raised over $104,000 in the four hours since it was published.

The description, which was originally in French, reads: “It is with immense sadness and heavy hearts that we launch this fundraising campaign to support the family of our friend, colleague and brother-in-arms, who tragically died in the line of duty.

“Behind the uniform was an exceptional man: a dedicated police officer, a loyal friend, a loving partner, and an extraordinary father. Today, he leaves behind a pregnant partner who was preparing to build a future with him, and a young child of only 3 years old who will grow up without his father.”

The page adds that while “no amount of money can fill this immense void” it hopes to “ease the burden now on (Benredouane’s) family and offer them some support during this heartbreaking ordeal.”

“All of Quebec mourns the loss of an exemplary police officer who dedicated his life to protecting others. Today, it is our turn to care for those he loved most,” it reads.

Meanwhile, SPVM said in an online tribute to Benredouane: “His passing is a great loss to our organization. His sense of duty, dedication, and professionalism will forever remain in our memories.”

Benredouane, who had been an SPVM officer since 2021, is the first police officer killed in the line of duty in Montreal since 2002.

He was killed during a shootout near the Hilton Hotel in Montreal. A civilian was also killed in the crossfire, 68-year-old Michel Mizrahi, as well as the suspected shooter.

A second officer, a woman, was injured but is in stable condition.

The Quebec coroner identified the alleged shooter as Seth Scott Hatfield of Lethbridge, Alberta on Tuesday, The Canadian Press and other news sources report.

A manifesto allegedly written by the suspect, 104 pages in length, has been circulating online.
