Minority Report Ending Explained: Tom Cruise’s Only Movie With Colin Farrell That is Still a Masterpiece

1 day ago 11

More than two decades ago, Minority Report hit the screens to mark the collaboration of Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, and mastermind filmmaker Steven Spielberg. The 2002 film dealt with the themes of free will versus determination in a world where the Precrime police foresaw crimes and stopped them before they took place. But then Cruise’s hero, John Anderton, got framed for murder, and everything took a turn for the worse for him.

While John eventually proves his innocence, it’s not in the way he initially tries to. Instead of convincing the PreCrime system that he won’t commit a murder, he finds out that his friend and superior, Lamar Burgess, had planted a minority report to protect himself and the PreCrime system. Burgess orchestrated the murder of the man that John was predicted to kill, to protect the system, as a past murder he committed would have been exposed if the system failed.

The final confrontation reveals that Burgess murdered Agatha’s mother and Danny Witwer (played by Colin Farrell), and also manipulated events to keep the Precrime program running. He explains why he killed the boy who was supposed to be the one to kill John in the original “red ball” report. When facing John, Burgess has to choose between either letting John get arrested or killing him to protect the PreCrime program.

As Burgess (played by Max von Sydow) chooses to kill himself, he clears John’s name in the process. Eventually, with John publicly declaring that the system is not 100% accurate since not everyone who is predicted to murder someone goes forward with it, the PreCrime system gets safely shut down. All the potential murderers and precogs are freed, and the precogs are sent to an undisclosed location to live in peace.

Following that, with the PreCrime now shut down, John reconciles with his wife, Lara (played by Kathryn Morris), as well. The two discover that she is still pregnant with their second child. To sum it up, the system is proven to be inaccurate to some extent and closed down, John Anderson is freed and his reputation is cleared, and all the other precogs are released to live in peace in the countryside, free from their work with PreCrime.

Even though it has been a long time since Minority Report hit the screens, loosely based on Philip K. Dick’s 1956 novella ‘The Minority Report’, it continues to be regarded as one of Steven Spielberg’s best works to date. Not only did the film outperform itself at the box offices worldwide, but it even garnered outstanding critical and general audience reviews.

Made on a reported budget of $102 million, the film successfully made a sweet $358.4 million at the global box office (via Box Office Mojo). Its reviews were equally commendable as the film scored a nice 89% critical score on the Tomatometer alongside an 80% general audience approval score on the Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes. IMDb gave it 7.6 stars out of 10.

The movie was 2002’s tenth most successful film worldwide, and was even nominated for and won multiple accolades. This includes an Oscar nod for Best Sound Editing. Out of 11 Saturn Award nominations, it won Best Science Fiction Film, Best Direction, Best Writing, and Best Supporting Actress. Not to mention, Minority Report has since been included in lists of the greatest science fiction films of all time, so that’s that too!

Tom Cruise “Wasnʼt Very Happy” With Colin Farrell on Minority Report

Both Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell did an epic job with their performance in Minority Report. And yet, it seems like the latter still managed to piss off the former, with the reason being Farrell’s staying out too late the night before shooting day, since he was celebrating his birthday.

During a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he recalled how this incident went down for him, sharing,

I had one of the worst days I’ve ever had on a film set [on ‘Minority Report’]. It was my birthday on May 31, and we were shooting, and I begged production – who did I think I was? – of a $120 million film if they [could] not have me working on my birthday. So, of course, my pickup was 6 a.m. on May 31, and I got up to all sorts of nonsense the night before. And I remember getting into bed, and as soon as I turned off the light, the phone rang, and it was the driver, [who] said, ‘It’s 10 past 6.’ And I went, ‘Oh, sh*t.’

If arriving late on the sets wasn’t enough, assistant director David H. Venghaus Jr. even stopped and told him that he couldn’t go for the shoot like that, since he was clearly hungover. But Farrell wasn’t deterred, and instead told him to get him “six Pacifico Cervezas and a packet of 20 [Marlboro] Red” – which, he says, “worked in the moment.” He continued to share,

So I had a couple of beers and went to set, but it was terrible. I’ll never forget the line that I had that I couldn’t get out. It was, ‘I’m sure you’ve all grasped the fundamental paradox of pre-crime methodology.’ That was the line that started the scene.

I remember [the crew] coming up and saying, ‘Do you want to go out and take a breath of fresh air?’ And I remember thinking, ‘If I go out and take a breath of fresh air, then I’ll be under more pressure when I come back in to be better.’ And I went, ‘No, we’ll just go through it.’ It took 46 takes. Tom wasn’t very happy with me. Tom, who I love, was not very happy.

Of course, as fans must already know, Cruise is a pretty serious personality when it comes to his work, and he follows a strong and disciplined work ethic, to which numerous collaborators over the years have attested. Thus, he holds his colleagues to such a high standard as well. Unfortunately, though, it was Farrell’s birthday, so can you really blame him?

Minority Report can currently be watched on Paramount Plus and Prime Video.
