His family has no ties to the entertainment industry, unlike Jason Bateman’s Hollywood roots. His mother was a primary school teacher, and his father taught music in school.

He also revealed that he has a twin brother named Merlin Bateman. Merlin is an award-winning artist specializing in charcoal portraits. Merlin is also a member of the Oxford Art Society.

The Bateman siblings lead varied careers, from teaching to Red Cross work. Tom, in an interview with People (Popsugar), described them as “an amazing gang,” covering every single base. 

When Is Hedda Releasing on Streaming?

Tom Bateman’s latest movie, Hedda released on Prime Video on October 29, 2025. The movie had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. It received a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles on October 22, 2025.

Hedda is a modern retelling of Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, set against the backdrop of contemporary society. Tessa Thompson plays the titular character, Hedda Gabler. The woman was caught between the lingering pull of a past love and the quiet suffocation of her current life. As Hedda’s long-repressed desires resurface, she manipulates those around her, pushing everyone into a spiral of passion, deceit, and betrayal (via Amazon).

Tom Bateman plays George Tesman, Hedda’s husband. The cast also features Imogen Poots, Nicholas Pinnock, and Nina Hoss. Nia DaCosta (known for Candyman and The Marvels) is directing and writing the screenplay.
