Variety recently revealed that Mike Flanagan is at the drawing boards once again, working on a potential 8-episode series for Amazon which will be based on Stephen King’s first-ever novel, Carrie, published in 1974.

A few years after it was published, Carrie was brought to life by director and screenwriter Brian De Palma, who is most known for his work on the sets of Scarface and Carlito’s Way. According to Variety, the $2 million budget film grossed over $30 million at the box office and it’s largely considered as one of the greatest horror flicks ever.

De Palmo’s rendition of Carrie featured Sissy Spacek, John Travolta, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, Betty Buckley, and William Katt. Both Spacek and Laurie were bestowed with Oscar titles under the categories of Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

In 2013, Kimberly Peirce directed a remake under the same name, once again bringing King’s bestseller back to relevance. This film, which starred Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore didn’t necessarily do as great as the first one, but it grossed $84.7 million worldwide which was nearly triple its budget.

So far, Mike Flanagan hasn’t revealed anything regarding the potential 8-episode Amazon series. The foundation of the project is currently being built and we could possibly hear more from Flanagan by the end of this year or early 2025.

Variety mentioned that the Doctor Sleep hitmaker will work alongside Trevor Macy, who has been Flanagan’s riding partner at Intrepid Pictures. Flanagan and Macy will serve as executive producers while Melinda Nishioka is set to lead the entire project.

Flanagan also recently worked on The Life of Chuck, which is based on a recent Stephen King novella. Tom Hiddleston was cast as the lead role in the two-hour-long hour film which is set to release next year. The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival’s Audience Prize winner also featured Mark Hamill, Karen Gillan, and Kate Siegel.

The potential Carrie series will not be Flanagan’s first time working with Stephen King. He has already worked on Doctor Sleep, which was a sequel to The Shining, and Gerald’s Game
