A major error left thousands of fans in shock and panic. CNN prematurely posted an article and video titled "Remembering the Life of Actor Michael J. Fox" - even though there had been zero reports of the beloved "Back to the Future" star's death. The piece was quietly removed shortly after it went live.
According to TMZ, a CNN spokesperson confirmed the content was published by mistake and was taken down across all platforms. The network issued an apology to Michael J. Fox's family.
So everyone can breathe easy: Marty McFly is alive and well. Fox's representative told TMZ the actor "is doing great. He was at PaleyFest LA yesterday. He went on stage and gave interviews."
Fox made a surprise appearance at PaleyFest LA 2026 on Tuesday, joining the celebration for the finale of the comedy series "Shrinking" Season 3. The event at the Dolby Theatre Los Angeles featured an exclusive screening and a panel led by showrunner and co-creator Bill Lawrence, along with co-creator and star Jason Segel. The cast on hand included Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie, Christa Miller, Lukita Maxwell and Ted McGinley.
Fox appears as a guest star in the third season of the show.
His public appearances have become increasingly rare in recent years as he has significantly scaled back acting work due to his long battle with Parkinson's disease.
The "Back to the Future" icon was diagnosed at age 29 in 1990 but didn't go public with the news until 1998. Since then, he has become one of the most prominent voices in Parkinson's awareness and research. In 2000 he founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, which has raised and directed more than $2 billion toward scientific studies.
Fox officially retired from acting in 2020 because of speech and memory issues caused by the disease. He has still made select appearances, including his 2023 documentary "Still", guest spots on shows like "The Good Fight" and "Shrinking", and several voice acting projects.
