A concerning health update has emerged regarding Jordan Peterson, as his daughter has revealed that the prominent psychologist is currently dealing with a serious neurological condition.
The update, shared publicly by Mikhaila Peterson, outlines a complex medical situation that has significantly impacted both Peterson and his family over the past year.
According to Mikhaila, her father is suffering from what she described as a "psych med-induced neurological injury," which has led to a debilitating condition known as akathisia.
The disorder, often associated with severe restlessness and psychological distress, has proven particularly challenging in Peterson's case.
"We figured out that dad has a psych med-induced neurological injury, and has been suffering from akathisia," she wrote, offering one of the clearest explanations yet of his condition.
The update adds to a series of health struggles Peterson has faced in recent years. While he had previously stepped back from public life due to various complications, this latest revelation underscores the severity and persistence of his ongoing medical challenges.
Mikhaila explained that the current situation stems from a combination of factors, including past reactions to psychiatric medication, environmental triggers, and recent physical illnesses.
"It's been 6 years since any psych medications. Last summer, his symptoms started after a flare-up likely induced by mold (CIRS) and stress. It was complicated by pneumonia and associated sepsis a month later," she stated.
A long and difficult road to recovery
The emotional toll on the Peterson family has been profound. Mikhaila described the past year in stark terms, emphasizing the intensity of the experience. "This has been unbelievably hard on my family. Every day for the last year has been hell," she said.
She also highlighted the severity of akathisia, calling it one of the most distressing conditions she has witnessed.
"Dad's been suffering from an old neurological injury that's been more recently causing akathisia. Akathisia is the worst thing I've ever seen anyone go through. That sounds dramatic but it's true," she explained. "A lot of people don't survive it and there's no quick fix."
Peterson's condition is not entirely new. His daughter noted that he experienced similar symptoms in 2020 and 2021, which she attributed to complications from medication used to treat anxiety and related disorders.
However, the recent flare-up appears to be more severe, exacerbated by additional stressors including personal loss and significant life changes.
Mikhaila pointed to the passing of Peterson's parents, relocation, and environmental exposure as contributing factors. "This has been unbelievably hard," she reiterated, underscoring how multiple challenges converged at once.
Despite the gravity of the situation, there remains cautious optimism. Mikhaila indicated that a clearer understanding of the condition has allowed the family to seek appropriate medical care.
"Now that we know what it is and have proper doctors, it can be carefully healed again like it has before," she said.
The update has prompted renewed discussion about the potential long-term effects of psychiatric medications, with Mikhaila urging broader recognition of such cases.
She called for these issues to be "considered a national emergency," reflecting her belief that more awareness and research are needed.
As Jordan Peterson steps away from public engagements to focus on recovery, supporters and observers alike are left hoping that this latest chapter in his health journey will lead to meaningful improvement.
