Mark Zuckerberg’s latest AI product is drawing heavy criticism despite being pitched as a tool designed to make everyday life easier.
Meta’s new personal assistant, Muse, can handle everything from booking hotels to managing subscriptions. However, the access it may need to highly sensitive personal information has raised privacy concerns.
Despite those concerns, Meta has released two more AI models connected to the product and intends to introduce Muse to its Meta glasses in the coming months.
Mark Zuckerberg’s Muse AI Gets Roasted Over Its Reach Into Users’ Lives
Since launching Muse, Meta has marketed the AI tool as an always-available digital assistant capable of taking tedious tasks off users’ hands. The AI can reportedly call insurance companies, order groceries, book travel, manage subscriptions, and even help organize family plans.
However, a new report has savaged the product over the amount of personal information it may need to perform those tasks.
According to the publication, Muse can be given access to logins, passwords, banking details, messages, calendars, and contacts. That raises concerns about just how much users are handing over in exchange for convenience.
One of the outlet’s columnists, Ariana Bindman, described the product as a “digital panopticon disguised as an imp.” Its ability to understand a person’s habits and relationships, she argued, makes it far more intrusive than a typical assistant.
Reporter Says Muse Became His Go-To Brain
MEGAConcerns over Muse are not limited to the amount of data it can access.
New York Times technology reporter Eli Tan said he became so dependent on the AI while testing it that his instinct was increasingly to ask Muse for help rather than think things through himself.
“I ended up relying on it for everything,” Tan emphasized to the outlet.
He added that it felt as though he had handed over his “cognitive ability” to the assistant and admitted that the experience became concerning.
- Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently faced a possible billion-dollar tax complication tied to his planned move from California to Florida.
- The tech mogul recently faced victims’ families in court as a major trial over alleged harms linked to Facebook and Instagram got underway.
- Meta was also previously caught up in widespread platform outages affecting WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.
- The tech billionaire was recently revisited on the big screen in “The Social Reckoning,” though the film drew criticism for failing to match “The Social Network.”
Meta Defends Muse’s Need To Know
Xavier Collin/Image Press Agency / MEGADespite the concerns surrounding Muse, Meta maintains that the benefits of the AI assistant outweigh the potential risks.
Addressing criticism over how much access Muse may require to users’ personal information, the company argued that an AI agent needs sufficient context to understand requests and carry out tasks effectively.
The company also stressed that the assistant seeks approval before completing actions such as purchases or sending emails. It added that conversations with Muse are not shared with its advertising system.
Meta Doubles Down With Two More Muse Models
MEGAOn October 12, Meta pushed further with its plans to make Muse a major part of its AI ecosystem by introducing Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full.
The company described the products as its “most capable models to date,” built to deliver advanced performance across both personal and professional agentic tasks.
For now, access to the two models is split between different users. Muse Wonder is available to developers and builders, while Wonder Full is being offered to Muse Code subscribers. Meta also plans to eventually use Wonder to power parts of Muse itself.
Meta said the models were developed in line with its safety standards. It also intends to release a more detailed report, including additional safety evaluations, in the coming months.
Meta Puts Muse’s Next Move In The Frame
MEGAMeta is also working to make Muse available beyond phones and computers.
At Connect 2026, the company announced plans to bring the personal AI assistant to its smart glasses. This will allow users to interact with it hands-free throughout the day, wherever they go.
Meta also unveiled Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses and expanded its broader lineup of AI-powered eyewear. The unveiling came with the promise that users will have more than 100 styles across Ray-Ban, Oakley, and Meta Glasses by the end of the year.
