Margo’s Got Money Troubles Episodes 1-3 Recap: Can Margo Really Make It Work?

The first three episodes of Margo’s Got Money Troubles set the story that sits between comedy and chaotic drama, tracing how one impulsive decision can completely reroute a young woman’s life. Adapted from Rufi Thorpe’s novel, the series follows Margo Millet (Elle Fanning), a college student whose brief relationship with her married literature professor leads to an unexpected pregnancy.

As if it wasn’t enough of a poor decision, the first-year college student decided to keep the baby. Eventually, the series follows what comes after that: financial strain, fractured family relationships, and the pressure of becoming a parent without any real safety net.

Her journey feels less like a narrative arc and more like a series of survival decisions stacked on top of each other. By the end of Episode 3, we see how her financial difficulties have led her to explore some of the tricky ways people try to make the most money out of their uncertain situations. Here’s the breakdown of how Margo’s Got Money Troubles episodes 1-3 turn out.

How Did Margo Get Pregnant?

In Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Margo’s journey began with a reckless decision that quickly turned into something life-altering. While studying at Fullerton College, she caught the attention of her literature professor, Mark Gable, who praised her writing and encouraged her talent. Her long-distance bestie, Becca, immediately knew Mark just wanted to get into her pants.

Despite her warning, Margo did what Becca told her not to do, sleeping with Mark. The relationship was largely driven by curiosity, or rather, she wanted the validation that Mark was providing. However, the consequences are immediate and irreversible when she discovered she is pregnant.

Mark’s reaction was predictable. He wanted her to terminate the pregnancy and move on, but when Margo told him it looked like he had decided for her, Mark had to stick with “a woman’s body; your body, your choice.” Margo somehow felt she should keep the baby. Her decision to keep the baby is not framed as logical or even fully thought through. It seemed tied to a deeper need for purpose and identity.

Apparently, the person who became suddenly progressive with the promise that he would support her in any possible way turned cold after that, completely vanished from her life. The pregnancy journey wasn’t smooth at all. She struggled to sleep and climb into bed. The motherhood arrived without a support system, except her mother, who went through a similar experience.

Soon after Bodhi is born, two of Margo’s four roommates, who downright rejected the consequences of Margo’s decision, chose to move out. They couldn’t tolerate living with a crying infant, which is understandable when there’s exam season, especially for one who has a biochem exam. Poor colicky baby! The abruptness of their departure left Margo and her roommate Susie scrambling to adjust.

At the same time, Margo’s financial situation collapsed further. She was fired from her job after repeated absences and an incident where her mother brought the baby to work, making her unreliable in her employer’s eyes.

Can Shyanne Support Margo Without Reliving Her Own Past?

We also met Margo’s mother, Shyanne (Michelle Pfeiffer), who seemed to have already foreseen Margo’s future but somehow agreed with her daughter’s choice. Shyanne had lived through a similar experience, having raised Margo on her own after getting involved with a married man. That history shaped how she reacted to her daughter’s situation.

Shyanne was always supportive and showed up when needed. She never abandoned Margo. However, her emotional response is far more complicated. She couldn’t fully celebrate the pregnancy because she understood the long-term sacrifices it demanded.

These complications became even more evident as Margo struggled with motherhood. Shyanne helped where she could, but she was clearly overwhelmed when asked to step back into a full-time caregiving role. When she was babysitting Bodhi, she couldn’t handle the baby’s crying and ended up bringing him to Margo’s workplace. Clearly, she was not ready to relive that phase of her life.

At the same time, Shyanne was in a relationship with Kenny, a conservative church figure who seemed to bring her stability and a different kind of future. While Kenny was not openly hostile toward Margo’s decision to have a baby out of wedlock, his traditional views created an undercurrent of tension for Shyanne. In episode 2, Kenny and Shyanne got engaged, but Jinx’s arrival seemed to bring more trouble to their relationship with her daughter.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles: Grandfather Jinx Returns

Just as Margo’s situation became more unstable, her estranged father, Jinx (Nick Offerman), re-entered her life. A former professional wrestler with a history of substance abuse. Margo tried to reach out to her dad during her pregnancy, but got no response, and they thought he had died. In reality, he was in rehab, working hard to turn his life around. As soon as he got his phone back, he traded his championship belt for a motorcycle and immediately rushed to his daughter and met his grandson.

Unlike Shyanne, Jinx approached the situation with optimism. He seemingly saw Bodhi as an opportunity to make up for past mistakes and to build a new relationship with Margo. Coincidentally, Jinx was Susie, Margo’s roommate’s favorite wrestler. Margo never told her she was his daughter, as she was embarrassed. He hadn’t had a place to sleep that night, and as they have two rooms available, Margo let him in. His willingness to help, whether through cleaning and cooking, provided immediate relief.

When Jinx learned from Susie that they were looking for roommates, Jinx volunteered to let him stay. In exchange, he’ll cook and clean. Margo couldn’t help but worry about Jinx’s past relapses, especially as she has a newborn son now. When Jinx shared his story of coming clean, she ultimately agreed. But the decision turned into a big problem when her mom showed up.

Shyanne felt a bit envious at first. She asked why Margo wouldn’t consider moving back in with her, but on the other hand, she let his father co-live in her apartment. They had a full-blown argument about this during Shyanne’s wedding dress fitting. However, Shyanne later apologized for how she expressed her feelings. Despite everything, she couldn’t shake off her worry about Jinx’s potential relapse when chatting with Kenny.

Margo Got a Trust Fund For Bodhi

Financial pressure drives one of Margo’s most significant decisions. After losing her job and struggling to cover basic expenses, she confronted Mark, asking for financial support of $3000. Instead of resolving the issue, this leads to an intervention by his mother, Elizabeth. She believed Margo tricked her son, and now she’s trying to extort money. Thankfully, there was the lawyer.

The lawyer proposed setting up a trust fund for Bodhi worth $50,000, which will grow to $300,000 over time. In exchange, Margo must sign a non-disclosure agreement, and agree to drop out of Fullerton, not set foot in the future, and cut all contact with Mark.

Margo, without thinking much, agreed to sign the deal. She is surely a poor decision-maker. While it secured Bodhi’s future, it does nothing to address Margo’s immediate needs. She was still left without income, childcare, or stability. The decision reflects her priorities as a mother. Although it was a pragmatic choice, it came at the cost of her independence and voice.

What Led Margo to Choose OnlyFans?

With no job and mounting expenses, especially diapers, Margo reached a breaking point. When her father talked about one of his colleagues, Arabella, who got fired from WWE because she had an OnlyFans account, the idea stuck with Margo. The female wrestler apparently earned in a month what she used to make in a year from wrestling.

After hearing about the OnlyFans platform, Margo decided to create an account out of curiosity. She used the username “Hungry Ghost,” the poem Mark wrote to her when they were having an affair. She explored the site and noticed one creator making money out of insulting their subscribers’ p**ises.

It’s actually, after noticing how much her body has changed following childbirth, Margo reacted instinctively. Meanwhile, her best friend Becca suggested that she put her son in foster care, which made her extremely angry, and she threw her phone in the toilet.

She chose to offer similar commentary as the other creator for $20, testing the waters rather than committing to a clear direction. She masked her identity with alien emojis, a nod to her earlier writing interests. However, everything was going wrong in her personal life. As she was crying while holding her son, reassuring him that he was not a burden in her life, she received her first $20 payment.

It may be a small financial win, but it strongly suggests that this may become a central part of her survival strategy. Whether she slightly succeeds in this new venture or whether she can eventually return to her writing ambitions remains uncertain. It also raises another question: will she be able to keep this new income stream hidden from her family, especially her mom?

How far is she willing to go to secure a future for herself and Bodhi? Her new path offers opportunity, but it also carries risks that could reshape her relationships and identity. Whatever follows, we are surely getting more of her writing skills in her new profession. In the next episode, we are also expected to see some family drama, especially between Margo, Jinx, and Shyanne.
