This Maple Leafs loss wasn’t on Sergei Bobrovsky.

Against the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday night, the Leafs failed to play 60 minutes of consistently good hockey and were deserving of the 3-2 loss at Scotiabank Arena.
In the first match of a six-game home stand, Bobrovsky made 33 saves. His teammates didn’t find their legs until the third period, and a power-play goal, Utah’s second of the night, by Nick Schmaltz was the difference.
Jack Roslovic had his first two-goal game for the Leafs, with both assisted by captain Auston Matthews.
Though it was the 10th time in 11 starts that Bobrovsky allowed at least three goals, his play, overall, was not the defining issue.
Bobrovsky stretched across the crease to make a stunning save on Clayton Keller, only to have Schmaltz poke the loose puck over the goal line at 13:12 of the final period. It came with Darren Raddysh serving a cross-checking minor.
Midway through the third period, Matthews hit a streaking Roslovic at the Utah blue line, sending the winger in alone. One backhand move by Roslovic later, the game was tied 2-2.

Through 40 minutes, the Leafs didn’t have much business being in the game, certainly not at five-on-five.
Per naturalstattrick.com, the Mammoth had 46 shot attempts in the first two periods to the Leafs’ 20, as well as a 22-6 margin in scoring chances.
Bobrovsky was helped by at least three iron strikes by the Mammoth, but also was more in tune than he had been in several of previous starts.
On the whole, the Leafs couldn’t defend well against the Mammoth forecheck and had lots of trouble exiting the defensive zone.
Utah’s 2-1 lead going into the third period came with some controversy. As Andrew Peeke fired a point shot past Bobrovsky at 13:42 of the second, the netminder was at the top of his crease when Barrett Hayton bumped into him. After the on-ice officials met, the goal was allowed, and the decision was not challenged by Leafs coach Jim Hiller.
What would have been a third Utah goal was disallowed at 17:20 when Hayton clearly clipped Bobrovsky, and Mammoth coach Andre Tourigny didn’t so much as raise an eyebrow.
After a Dylan Guenther power-play goal late in the first period put Utah up 1-0, Roslovic tied the game at 10:20 of the second. Matthews was diligent on the forecheck and from the slot, Roslovic went high on goalie Sebastian Cossa’s glove side.
The goal by Guenther followed a pair of fruitless Leafs power plays.
