The Maple Leafs have recouped some offence on the opening day of National Hockey League free agency.

The Leafs reportedly signed forward Jack Roslovic, who is coming off back-to-back seasons of 20-plus goals, on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old Roslovic scored 21 goals in 69 games for the Edmonton Oilers in 2025-26 and 22 goals in 81 games for the Carolina Hurricanes two seasons ago.

Various reports had the Leafs and Roslovic hooking up on a contract for two years and an average annual value of $4 million US.

The Roslovic signing, marking general manager John Chayka’s initial foray into free agency, comes after Toronto traded Nick Robertson earlier on Wednesday to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Robertson (16 goals), Matias Maccelli (14) and Max Domi (12) combined for 42 goals last season, and the Leafs had to find a way to make up for at least part of that.

Maccelli was not qualified and Domi’s health is in question after he had post-surgery complications earlier in the off-season.

A right-handed shot, Roslovic was a teammate of Leafs captain Auston Matthews with the United States under-18 team in the 2014-15 season. Matthews led the team in scoring and Roslovic was second.

The Leafs had interest in Roslovic last summer under former GM Brad Treliving before the Columbus native signed with Edmonton.

Is Colton Sissons on board?

There was speculation that the Leafs were on the verge of signing centre Colton Sissons as well.

The 32-year-old Sissons, a native of North Vancouver, has spent the majority of his NHL career with Nashville after the Preds picked him in the second round of the 2012 draft.

Last season with the Vegas Golden Knights, Sissons had 11 points in 66 regular-season games, but was more productive in the Stanley Cup playoffs, recording eight points in 22 games.

He’s a responsible player and is strong in the faceoff circle. Last season, Sissons won 56.5% of his faceoffs.

In 756 career NHL games, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Sissons has 232 points (101 goals and 131 assists).

In 2025-26, Sissons averaged 12 1/2 minutes of ice time a game with Vegas.

One forward who had been linked to the Leafs, Mason Marchment, signed with the San Jose Sharks.
