The history of Thor Odinson predates the MCU or even the invention of comic book storytelling. Chris Hemsworth’s Asgardian Avenger is a fictional derivative of the figure from Norse mythology who has existed for thousands of years before Stan Lee and Jack Kirby willed him into existence. However, Thor’s second career path as a comic book superhero proved way more successful than his prospects as a Germanic god. Or so it seemed until the arrival of the Scarlet Witch.

Elizabeth Olsen’s MCU character is easily one of the most powerful beings in the entire universe. The Marvel superhero has not only proven herself against Ultron and Thanos — two of the most fearsome and worthy opponents — but has pulled herself through unimaginable loss and tragedy time and again while still willing to stand up for what’s right in the end.

As such, pitting Hemsworth’s Asgardian demigod against the by-product of a HYDRA experiment definitely comes off as an interesting topic of debate.

Elizabeth Olsen Has the Perfect Ammo Against Thor

One of MCU’s best, although severely underrated, films have been Avengers: Age of Ultron. As the live-action debut of Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, the action-heavy film didn’t shrink away from its gory scope to serve its PG-13 audience. The extent of the Avenger’s powers was on full display in the film’s entire arc.

With every passing project in the MCU, Wanda Maximoff’s abilities only seemed to grow until her ascension into the Scarlet Witch in WandaVision. No longer was she a telekinetic, telepathic source of nightmares who can alter reality and perception at will but was also one of the most powerful dream walkers hellbent on destroying worlds if it meant getting her children back.

A character of such immense strength could serve as a formidable opponent to Thor and Elizabeth Olsen knew exactly how. During her recent appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! segment, the actress claimed:

I think theory has it that Wanda could beat him. I could somehow manipulate and go inside his body and do the same thing he does.

As fun as it would be to watch Olsen’s Scarlet Witch play puppet master to Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, the actual implication of Olsen’s “theory” presents a terrifying aspect of the Avenger’s unique skillset. Age of Ultron already showed the audience how Wanda Maximoff’s psychological attack on her enemies could bring out their worst fears and nightmares and give a glimpse into their terrible fates. To put Thor through a similar mind-bender would definitely render even a powerful demigod like him paralyzed into submission.

The Legacy of Avengers: Endgame in the MCU

Avengers: Endgame has given us a phenomenon worthy of being celebrated despite its bitter aftermath. The movie that redefined the art of connective storytelling and sent shockwaves of seismic proportions across the globe is not a feat to be taken lightly. Superhero franchises may have lost touch with reality and fans may have fallen out of love with the genre but Endgame will always remain one of the defining moments that makes a comic book fan proud to be alive at a time like this.

However, such an experience comes at a cost that involves decades of investment and a singular devotion to these fantastical stories about gods and mortals. Multitudes of films and dozens of reruns later, the emotional impact of the Infinity Saga left the whole world crippled. The fandom that carried Marvel through its worst phases still sticks around due to the nostalgia and momentum that Endgame left behind.

The subject of the Infinity Saga Avengers always funnels the fans back to a bygone era where death, loss, and tragedy were not yet the order of the day. An opportunity to relive the good old days always feels like a reprieve from the current state of affairs at Marvel HQ. As such, pitting Thor against Scarlet Witch is the best thing that can happen to the franchise right now.

Avengers: Endgame is available for streaming on Disney+.
