SUMMARY

  • Christian Bale delivered a great performance with Gorr, despite the MCU butchering the great character from the comics.
  • Bale could return as another version of Gorr in Desak, another God Slayer from Thor's canon.
  • Alternatively, the character could return in the manner that it did in the comics, where he would consume the universe than then be slain by an alliance of gods.

Christian Bale worked well with Gorr the God-Butcher in the MCU, even if the way the character was written fell flat on its face. When compared to the atrocities that Gorr committed in the comics, and the lengths that Thor had to go to to defeat the God-Butcher, Love and Thunder failed miserably to communicate the menace that was the Gorr’s hatred for the gods.

Given that the character has been killed off, it might seem like one of Thor’s greatest stories will never receive the adaptation it deserves. However, there is one character in Thor’s comics history who could echo the atrocities of Gorr the God Butcher, and perhaps even allow the story arc for the character to play out. Apart from that, it could also allow Chirs Hemsworth to take the different direction that he wants to take with the character.

Desak Sterixian first appeared on Marvel’s pages in 1998, in the Thor 2001 Annual. Having sacrificed his daughter to an uncaring god, Desak took up arms against the god of his people, aided by a magical jewel. Desak would go from planet to planet and dimension to dimension to slay the gods who rain misery onto mortals. His first encounter with Thor came when the Prince of Thunder, along with Beta Ray Bill and Hercules was shown a vision of a desolate Olympus, wrought by Desak.

Called Desak the God Slayer, Gorr’s storyline mirrors the character’s narrative to some extent, from gaining divine weapons to slay gods, to losing his daughter to an uncaring deity. Given that Gorr might be gone from the MCU, Desak could serve as the replacement for the character, and carry out the various atrocities that were left out of Gorr’s quest for vengeance against eh divine.

Gorr could return to fight an older King Thor

Gorr the Godbutcher also finds a way back into the Marvel Universe, when he is resurrected by Loki in a body to end his life after he has slain Thor, or so he planned. Gorr returned with all his might, ready to slay Thor and Loki, only to be aided by the lost gods of the Universe, those who were without pantheons or people in the wake of Gorr’s first rampage. These gods were rehabilitated on Indigarr, the world without gods that Thor encountered as an Avenger when he met with Gorr a second time.

These gods, along with Loki, would aid Thor in defeating Gorr, who would consume the universe. Loki would sacrifice himself to defeat Gorr, and Thor, once seeing Midgard is safe, would follow suit, plunging into the darkness of the universe, as his granddaughters took over as caretakers of Midgard, now the center of creation.

The MCU could give this send-off to Chris Hemswroth‘s Thor, whose fifth film could take place at the end of the MCU’s continuity. It would allow some creators to have a lot of creative freedom with the characters and the narrative, while also bringing Thor’s story to an end without completely benshing him.
