Man seriously injured in Laval house fire

A man in his 40s has been hospitalized with severe burns sustained in a fire that swept through a house in suburban Laval on Saturday and destroyed much of the structure.

There is evidence to suggest the fire may have been deliberately set, said Lt. Geneviève Major, spokesperson for the Laval police department. The file has been transferred from the fire department to police, she said, and they were on the scene Sunday morning.

The fire broke out shortly before 3:25 p.m. in a house on Boudreau St. in the Ste-Dorothée district of Laval. It was brought under control, but firefighters remained on the scene until about midnight to ensure it was extinguished, Major said.

According to media reports, witnesses said they heard a violent explosion before the fire broke out.

Three nearby homes were also damaged in the fire, but there were no other injuries, Major said.
