What Is Lucky About?

Lucky follows Luciana ‘Lucky’ Armstrong, an accomplished con artist who is forced to flee after a multimillion-dollar robbery goes disastrously wrong. Her escape becomes increasingly complicated because the FBI and a ruthless criminal leader are both searching for her, while the people closest to Lucky cannot automatically be trusted. Lucky must survive while finding a permanent route out of the criminal existence that shaped her. That ambition adds a personal dimension because the abilities protecting her are closely connected to the upbringing she wants to leave behind.

Olyphant portrays her imprisoned father, John Armstrong, whose criminal influence helped make deception and constant movement ordinary parts of Lucky’s childhood. Bening plays criminal leader Priscilla Masterson, while Ellis-Taylor appears as FBI Agent Billie Rand. Starkey portrays Cary, whose relationship with Lucky is closely connected to the failed robbery. Collins Jr. joins the ensemble as Harris Dutch, while Fichtner also holds a prominent supporting role.

Taylor-Joy was particularly interested in portraying a morally ambiguous woman because television has historically offered more such characters to male actors. She explained that Lucky’s inability to remain still, combined with her dependence on taking from other people, presented a side of the con artist archetype that she had rarely encountered. Her comments suggest that the adaptation intends to examine the emotional consequences of surviving through deception rather than presenting Lucky’s crimes as effortless entertainment.
