Lioness Season 3 Episode 1 Recap: The War Just Followed Joe Home

The third season of Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ spy thriller, Special Ops: Lioness, opens with an episode called The Spider and the Fly. It wastes no time reminding us what this show is really about. Zoe Saldaña‘s Joe McNamara runs a covert military program, and every season she pays for it at home.

This premiere makes that price higher than ever. It starts by showing us a version of Joe we have rarely seen before. She is settled, happy, and surrounded by her family. And then the premiere rips it away within minutes. Joe is kidnapped by several men as she leaves for work, and we are taken six months back in time to where all of this started.

By the time the hour ends, the war Joe fights overseas has walked right up to her doorstep and knocked. M.N. Miller of FW gave the show a 9/10 in our review of Lioness Season 3 and praised the show as “a spectacular pressure cooker of espionage, politics, and personal sacrifice.” Here is everything that goes down in the episode.

Who Is Aleksi Yurimov and Why Is Joe’s Team Hunting Him?

In the flashback sequence, we are taken to Langley, where Michael Kelly’s Byron Westfield meets with Nicole Kidman‘s Kaitlyn Meade to discuss their latest mission: an informant who approached Kyle. They plan a meeting with the informant on the grounds of Georgetown University.

Elizaveta Neretin’s informant character is a Ukrainian agent working as a double agent inside Russia’s SVR. The whole team works undercover while Joe makes the actual contact. The informant hands Joe a name, Aleksi Yurimov. He is the man in charge of a secret Russian military intelligence outfit called the SSD. She wants the CIA to grab him.

When Joe asks what the catch is, the answer is blunt. Yurimov is one of Putin’s most trusted enforcers, and taking him would invite serious retaliation against the Ukrainians. There is some very Sheridan-flavoured dialogue here about knocking a major piece off Putin’s chessboard.

In exchange, the informant explains that her own work is recruitment and infiltration, saying that she is the one who runs the honeypot operations. With such a potential resource at hand, the CIA decides to pursue Yurimov. The dialogue between them is a little cheesy, but it does the job. The team is in, and the mission takes them to Donetsk, Ukraine.

Was the Lioness’ Donetsk Operation a Success?

Ukraine looks nothing like the deserts of earlier seasons. The battlefield sequence that follows is the biggest thing the show has attempted. They face a huge drone strike raining down on them while ground forces fire back, and Joe’s team sprints through a forest under the cover of trees.

They reach an underground bunker where Dawn Olivieri’s CIA intelligence officer Amber Whelan is running operations with her team. Waiting there is a Delta Force unit that includes Taylor Sheridan himself as the veteran operator, Cody. There is a new face as well, Ian Bohen’s Grady, a by-the-book Delta operator and the team’s primary K9 handler.

Intel points to Yurimov being inside a pipeline, planning something. Getting to him is the problem, and the two teams argue hard over how to do it. The plan they land on puts the dogs at the centre of it, using heavy mist for cover in broad daylight. Joe and Cruz go in with Delta Force while the rest of the team holds the bunker, with Bobby on overwatch waiting for them to come back.

The K9 unit is released into the fog first. The dogs and the operators tear through the North Korean soldiers guarding the pipeline entrance. On the way in, Joe and Sheridan’s Cody butt heads once. Inside the pipeline, the fight turns ugly, and one of the dogs is stabbed.

They take Yurimov alive and cut a tracker out of his left armpit so his position cannot be relayed. The escape means shooting drones out of the sky before they make it back to the bunker. The mission works, with the only casualty being the dog, which lands harder than you might expect. However, the team is devastated, and the emotional trauma is sure to hang over them.

What Happens at Joe’s Home in the Ending?

Joe comes home after the deployment, and for a moment it looks like the usual decompression scene. However, a knock at the door puts her on alert. Two men are standing outside claiming to be state police. Joe knows that they are not police, and they attack her.

Joe kills both of them in her own house. Her husband wakes up to find the aftermath, and the look on his face says everything. For two seasons, home was the one place the job could not reach. That protection is now gone, and it is gone permanently. It also reframes the opening. We already know that somewhere down the line, someone gets close enough to Joe to take her.

This episode shows us the first attempt, and the fact that it happened at her front door rather than in a trench in Ukraine is the whole point. The title, The Spider and the Fly, suddenly reads very differently. The upcoming episodes of Lioness Season 3 will reveal what the show has in store for Joe.
