I had been a Toronto Maple Leafs fan since I was six years old in 1960 when I received a Leafs jersey for Christmas and my twin brother, who didn’t even like sports, received a Canadiens jersey.

For a few years, life was great, but after 1967 I suffered so many years with the Leafs, wishing my parents had given me that Habs jersey. I even tried to change “hills” several times to the Habs, Canucks or some other Canadian team, but my heart would not let me.

Then, hallelujah, in 1992 the Ottawa Senators began playing in the NHL. That year I changed “hills” from the lowly Leafs to the Ottawa Senators, and my heart allowed me to.

Life has been so much better since that day. For Leafs fans, do what I did — now! Life will be so much happier for you. Go Sens Go!

A new low for U.S. defence secretary

U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s mockery of a Canadian cadet is truly a new low for a man who has already brought the bar of conduct to unprecedented depths.

As my daughter discovered as a cadet with HMCS Centurion in Kanata, the cadet program provides an inclusive space for kids from every background and level of ability to learn new skills, be a part of a team and make a positive contribution to their community under the guidance of dedicated volunteers.

Like most bullies, Hegseth’s childish insult says more about his character than it does about his victim, and I sincerely hope that the cadet and volunteer in the picture he posted are heartened by the number of people who are cheering them on and are proud of their service.

Printers and ink cartridges and full landfills

We wonder why we have trouble with our landfill quotas. The other day, I bought two ink cartridges for my printer. The cost for these two cartridges was $127.58. You can buy a new printer for the cost of ink.

Many people will, I’m sure, opt for a printer rather than pay for cartridges, so the (old) printer is sent to the dump. How shortsighted is that?

This is, of course, just one, I am sure, of the insurmountable numbers of throwaway products that are headed for our dumping sites. I would suspect the reasoning behind this is the push for higher profit margins and the shortsightedness of industry.
